No, it did not explode. It started to, but the rudimentary design of the device was apparently flawed, and firefighters and bomb squad officers were able to prevent it from going up.
The three propane tanks and ten gallons of gasoline would have done serious damage, and being Times Square, potentially hundreds of people would have been injured or killed.
Based on recent events, it would be wise to expect more of this. The US has been largely spaired the experience of terrorist attacks. The attacks of 9/11 let the genie out of the bottle. It would be wise to become very aware of what is around you. Paranoia and panic are a mistake. Just learn to heighten your situational awareness.

the area where you want to be is where Broadway and 7th Avenue intersect, and that occurs from 43rd Street to 46th Streets, so all you really need to do is: walk along the sides of Bway/7th Avenue between 43rd and 46th Streets, and you've basically seen 90% of all there is to see. it'll take you all of about 15 minutes.
of course, you can walk as far up Bway and 7th Avenue as you want, like to 50th Street, because those areas are always busy and lit up.

To me, it makes more sense to walk a little further and not have to transfer between subway lines, than to transfer just to save a little walking distance. But it's up to you.

By train Kingsland station is closest. You have to kind of walk out and around to get to Medieval times from there - I would say maybe 20 to 25 minutes walk at most if you don't mind the hills. From the station - left on Ridge, left on valley brook, left on polito..Medieval times is on the left.

Currently there is only 1 subway line that runs Uptown (above 59th Street) on the East Side of Manhattan: the 4-5-6 (the dark green line), which runs up and down Lexington Avenue.
The 6 stops at 110th Street, 103rd Street, 96th Street, 86th Street, 77th Street, 68th Street-Hunter College and 59th Street. The 4 and 5 are express trains, so they stop only at 86th Street and 59th Street.
