Did a car bomb explode near Times Square on Saturday May 1 2010?
No, it did not explode. It started to, but the rudimentary design of the device was apparently flawed, and firefighters and bomb squad officers were able to prevent it from going up.
The three propane tanks and ten gallons of gasoline would have done serious damage, and being Times Square, potentially hundreds of people would have been injured or killed.
Based on recent events, it would be wise to expect more of this. The US has been largely spaired the experience of terrorist attacks. The attacks of 9/11 let the genie out of the bottle. It would be wise to become very aware of what is around you. Paranoia and panic are a mistake. Just learn to heighten your situational awareness.
Now say thankyou to the nice men who helped the bomb not go off.
"Thankyou men.."
God save them. They are our everyday heros.
Can you take the metro from Times Square to Penn Station?
Yes. Take the Downtown 1-2-3 (the red line), 1 stop, from 42nd Street-Times Square (at 7th Avenue) to 34th Street-Penn Station.
the space that one would consider to be strictly within Times Square is pretty small.
the area where you want to be is where Broadway and 7th Avenue intersect, and that occurs from 43rd Street to 46th Streets, so all you really need to do is: walk along the sides of Bway/7th Avenue between 43rd and 46th Streets, and you've basically seen 90% of all there is to see. it'll take you all of about 15 minutes.
of course, you can walk as far up Bway and 7th Avenue as you want, like to 50th Street, because those areas are always busy and lit up.

Why was Times Square called Lansdowne Square?
It wasn't called Lansdowne Square. It was called Longacre Square. Why? I don't know.
Around 1878 the section of Broadway and 7th Avenue in Manhattan was the city's carriage-trade center, and was then known as Longacre Square -- Longacre being the carriage center in London. In a couple of decades, theaters would begin moving into the Longacre Square area from their old center at Union Square, and the carriage trade would greatly suffer from the advent of the "horseless carriage." In 1904 Longacre Square was officially renamed Times Square, after the New York Times Building, that became the cornerstone of the new district.
Which subway line do you take from Times Square to 72nd Street and Fifth Avenue?
Depending on how far you want to walk, you can take the Uptown N-R-Q (the yellow line) from 42nd Street-Times Square to 59th Street-5th Avenue, and then walk up 5th Avenue to 72nd Street. The walk is a little over half a mile (0.8 km).
Or, you can take the Uptown N-R-Q to 59th Street-Lexington Avenue (the next stop after 59th-5th) and transfer to the Uptown 6 local train (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line). Take the Uptown 6, 1 stop, from 59th-Lexington to 68th Street-Hunter College (at Lexington Avenue). Then walk 4 blocks north to 72nd Street, and 3 blocks west to 5th Avenue: Lexington ---> Park ---> Madison ---> 5th. The walk is a little less than half a mile.
To me, it makes more sense to walk a little further and not have to transfer between subway lines, than to transfer just to save a little walking distance. But it's up to you.

How do you get to the Brooklyn Bridge from Times Square by train?
Take the Downtown Q express train (of the N-R-Q, the yellow line), 2 stops, from 42nd Street-Times Square to 14th Street-Union Square. You can also take the N or R but they are local trains so it will take a lot longer.
Transfer at 14th Street-Union Square to the Downtown 4 or 5 express trains (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line), 1 stop, to Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall. Again, you can also take the 6 but it is a local train and will take much longer.
You'll exit the subway at the intersection of Chambers and Centre Streets (at the northeast corner of City Hall Park). Walk south on Centre Street (along the east side of City Hall Park) until you reach the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge Promenade (about 1/3 of the way down the length of the park).

Is Medieval Times in Lyndhurst within walking distance of the Lyndhurst train station?
Better idea is to take the NJ Transit bus 192 local which will drop you off right at the corner of Rutherford and polito ave (Medieval Times is on Polito). Maybe 2 minute walk from the corner. Coming from the city it's the first stop.
By train Kingsland station is closest. You have to kind of walk out and around to get to Medieval times from there - I would say maybe 20 to 25 minutes walk at most if you don't mind the hills. From the station - left on Ridge, left on valley brook, left on polito..Medieval times is on the left.
Which subway do you take from Central Park to Times Square?
Although Central Park is only about 0.5 miles (0.8 kilometers) wide, it is 2.5 miles (4 km) long, so the answer depends on where in the park you're coming from.
For reference, the portion of 8th Avenue that borders the park is called Central Park West, the portion of 59th Street that borders the park is called Central Park South, and the portion of 110th Street that borders the park is called Central Park North. However, for some reason, the portion of 5th Avenue that borders the park is not called Central Park East.
From the north end of the park, you can take the Downtown 2 or 3 (of the 1-2-3, the red line) from 110th Street-Cathedral Parkway, at Central Park North and Lenox Avenue, to 42nd Street-Times Square.
From the southwest corner of the park, you can take the Downtown 1 train (the 2 late nights) from 59th Street-Columbus Circle (at the 3-way intersection of Broadway, 59th Street and 8th Avenue) to 42nd Street-Times Square.
From the southeast corner of the park, you can take the Downtown N-R-Q-W (the yellow line) from 59th Street-5th Avenue to 42nd Street-Times Square.
From the west end of the park (Central Park West) you can take the Downtown C train (of the A-C-E, the blue line). The C runs up and down Central Park West and stops at 110th Street-Cathedral Parkway (which is a different station than the 110th Street-Cathedral Parkway Station on the 2 and 3. It's located at the northwest corner of the park, which is the corner of Central Park West and Central Park North), 103rd Street, 96th Street, 86th Street, 81st Street-Museum of Natural History, 72nd Street and 59th Street.
You can take the C to 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal, at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. This is one block west of Times Square (42nd Street and 7th Avenue).
If you're starting out on the east end of the park, then you'll have to walk 3 blocks east to Lexington Avenue (5th ---> Madison ---> Park ---> Lexington). Currently there is only 1 subway line that runs Uptown (above 59th Street) on the East Side of Manhattan: the 4-5-6 (the dark green line), which runs up and down Lexington Avenue.
The 6 stops at 110th Street, 103rd Street, 96th Street, 86th Street, 77th Street, 68th Street-Hunter College and 59th Street. The 4 and 5 are express trains, so they stop only at 86th Street and 59th Street.
Take the Downtown 4-5-6 to 59th Street-Lexington Avenue, and transfer there to the Downtown N-R-Q-W to 42nd Street-Times Square.
