To Kill a Mockingbird

Mrs. Dubose is a morphine addict struggling with a serious illness. She is described as very sick, physically frail, and often in pain. Despite her illness, she demonstrates strength and determination by trying to overcome her addiction.

Mr. Avery came to see the Logans in "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" to discuss a land deal concerning the potential sale of the Land. He wanted to persuade the Logans to sell their land to him, but Mr. Logan firmly refused.

Atticus asks Mr. Bob Ewell to write his name on a piece of paper while he is cross examining him. Mr. Ewell writes his name with his left hand, so he is left handed, which proves that Tom Robinson could not have raped and beaten Ms. Mayella Ewell, because Tom Robinson's left arm is completely crippled from an accident he had long ago. Ms. Mayella Ewell had been beaten on the right side of her body. Atticus shows that it was Bob Ewell who beat Mayella, but due to the racism in Maycomb, Tom Robinson was wrongly convicted as a black man.

The Novel starts with the summer before she starts kindergarten and ends by the time she is in about 2nd grade.

In Chapter 23, the bottom of page 220. It's in the paragraph that begins with "You couldn't..."

Atticus is different to the other fathers, as he does not believe in racism and also does not judge people. Also, he acts as a father to other people along side the father of his children.

e.g. when Jem invited Walter Cunningham to dinner at the Finch household, Atticus greeted him with respect and did not judge him on the wealth of Walter's family. x

Atticus is suggesting that only the innocent and pure at heart, like children, have the capacity to weep for the injustices and cruelties they witness in the world, as they have not yet been hardened by experience or prejudice. He is highlighting the unique empathy and sensitivity that children possess.

There are lots of sub-plots in holes but here are some:are Madame Zeroni and Elya (they had a deal that was broken by Elya), Sam and Kate (they loved each other but couldn't be together) and the warden looking for the treasure.

In "To Kill a Mockingbird," Scout was taken to the pageant by Jem and Aunt Alexandra.

Scout wants to quit school because her teacher told her she wouldn't be allowed to read or write for years.

Miss Prissy's nephew was Egghead, a character from Looney Tunes who first appeared in the 1940s. Egghead is often portrayed as a bumbling and awkward character, providing comic relief in various cartoons.

Mrs. Dubose left a single white camellia flower for Jem as a gift after her passing. She knew that Jem had read to her during her battle with addiction and wanted to show her appreciation for his efforts.

Jem says that mixed children are sad because they don't belong to anywhere. In this novel, racism and separation of social class is one of the themes. These children are sad because the blacks do not want them, nor the whites.

Atticus actually reveals several themes throughout the story.

The most obvious and important being prejudice.

This is shown many times. He shows how ms. dubose was not the grumpy old

crone they thought her to be, and rather a fighting drug addict who conquered her addiction. He helps Scout realize that Boo was just an agoraphobic neighbor who lived his life through the children. There are other examples too.

Basically, he reveals that people aren't who they seem to be.

" Maycomb was an old town, but was a tired old town when I was first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop;grass grew on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square. "(5)
Maycomb is a small town in Alabama. There is no mystery to this southern town because everybody knows everthing about everyone who lives there.

Dolphus Raymond understands that Dill is crying because Mr. Gilmer is being so condescending to Tom. While Dolphus does all he can to comfort Dill, he tells Dill that he (Dill) had better get used to it, because this is the way that whites treat blacks (and white who chose to associate with blacks). Dolphus doesn't have the optimistic outlook that Atticus and Miss Maudie seem to possess--that life and society can get better if people just learn that blacks are humans with feelings and rights just like whites.

Harper Lee created a sense of hope and anticipation before the jury's decision to emphasize the injustice and prejudice prevalent in the society of Maycomb. By presenting a hopeful outlook, she highlights the harsh reality of racial bias and the devastating impact it has on the outcome of the trial. This technique underscores the overarching theme of social inequality and the challenges of seeking justice in a prejudiced environment.

Toms storry immediatley contradict mayellas testimony by

Boo Radley was a lonely man because he was isolated from the community, living as a recluse in his house. He rarely interacted with others, leading to rumors and speculation about his mysterious behavior, further contributing to his loneliness. Boo's lack of social connections and participation in the neighborhood made him an enigmatic figure, keeping him isolated from the outside world.

Scout, Dill, and Jem sit in the "colored balcony" during the trial, as there is no room for them on the main floor of the courthouse. They watch the proceedings from this segregated section reserved for African Americans.

Atticus is worried about the well-being and reception of the people in Maycomb due to the deeply ingrained racism and prejudice in the town. He knows that the racial tensions and injustices facing the African American community could lead to serious consequences such as violence and discrimination. Atticus understands the potential for conflict and harm that exists in a community filled with intolerance and narrow-mindedness.

Calpurnia wants to make sure that the children are perfectly dressed so that none of her friends can say anything negative about her or the children. She does not want the church members to accuse her of doing anything less than the best for Jem and Scout.

Scout found it strange that the church was only for Black people, the congregation sang hymns without any musical instruments, people gave what they could during the offering, the preacher had a unique style of preaching, and the church was hot and uncomfortable but the congregation stayed engaged.

Dill told Miss Rachel that they had been playing strip poker and lost their clothes, so they were too embarrassed to show up until it got dark.

The fourth person under the tree makes odd clicking noises and high-pitched whispers that sound like they might be speaking a foreign language. Some people have reported hearing faint music or chanting coming from their direction as well.
