How does lupus affect immune system?

We are unsure of the exact mechanisms that brings about RA . However researchers feel these factors are involved. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder. That is a disorder where the immune system of the body mistakenly destroys the bodies own tissue. In the case of RA, joints and other tissues of the body are attacked by the immune system. Chemicals called cytokines are used by the immune system cells to communicate. It is thought that people with RA have too much of certain types of cytokines, including interleukin (IL) and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), which may be sending the messages that cause the joints to be attacked. There is a greater risk of having RA if there is a member of the family with the disease or if you are female. Some family's are genetically predisposed to RA making them more prone to the disease. Biological factors such as hormone changes, or factors such as an infection, are believed to trigger the immune system to attack the joints in people prone to RA.

Why is it easier on child to have tonsillectomy?

Children, who still have very weak immune systems and whose immune systems are still strengthening, are exposed to germs and bacteria frequently, especially while playing, thus the tonsils are prone to get infected. Adults hardly get tonsillitis due to changes that take place in the tonsils after puberty. Tonsils involute (“curl up”) after puberty and their function decreases. It also occurs as an allergic reaction to allergens, for example pollen, cold things, food preservatives, drugs, mechanical injury etc. Overcrowding, poor nutrition and inadequate ventilation help propagate epidemics of tonsils. Fatigue and exposure to cold may lower the body’s resistance to infection.

How do you get someone to eat after a tonsillectomy?

hi there, I'm currently on day 7 of my recovery. I'm guessing you are very early post-op or pre op. So I'll go into as much detail as possible.

-Take your pain medication like clockwork, if your dr says take it every 8 hours, you need to take it every 8 hours, even if it doesn't hurt, this is so when you hit day that 1-4 day period where things start getting rough, you don't want to be catching up on your meds.

-Be prepared to go and buy stronger medication. I went out and bought Co-codramol (parecetemol & codeine)

-DRINK LOTS OF WATER!! This may be the most important thing for recovery. In the 7 day period of my recovery, I've had at least 27-30 bottles of water, (during day 3 i went through about 10)

-Watch films and don't move around to much. I made this mistake and walked out of my room, in doing so i tripped on a wire and my throat bled for a while, so try to move slowly when going anywhere, also avoid long walks (made that mistake too) because it shakes your throat causing pain.

-Eating. I know it hurts because I've just got over the worst of it. you need to eat, the longer you don't eat, the longer your recovery (more pain) and also when you don't eat your chances of becoming infected multiply rapidly. so make sure you eat.

Food suggestions- Tuna on white bread sandwiches

- Jelly (only soothing not very good if your hungry)

- Pasta

- Cake (if your having trouble eating, this will keep energy up)

- Eggs (I haven't had any but I hear they are very good)

Food precautions - Spicy! Do not have spicy food, it will burn and sting

- No crunchy sharp foods, eg crisps, it will scratch off your scabs.

- No citrus or acidic foods (I love orange juice so that was hard for me)

Stages- Day 1-2 These are not too bad, meds from hospital wearing off at end of day 2. prepare yourself for dy 3 by taking medication correctly

-Day 3-5 These were the worst days for me. You will feel like dying and I know this doesn't help as i've read it everywhere but I promise you, it gets better.

-Day 6 This is usually the earliest day that people's scabs come off. You will feel like coughing (Don't) Just eating soft foods (progressively getting harder) and they will come off.

-Day 6-14 I'm only on day 7 however, from what I've gathered, it just gets better from here so fingers crossed. However, you still need to take it easy, even after pain has gone!

So what can you do? Just sit around, watch TV, go to the cinima with friends (NO POPCORN), Play games, read books (if you read books just sit there and read, it feels awesome)

As hard as this may be, try not to bend over too much, when you do it you'll realise it hurts.

Sorry for the long answer, I wish i had a guide when i started my recovery. Just be patient, allso it normalif you can't talk or you can but it hurts so you don't, I'm still having trouble talking.

Anyway, good luck in your recovery. Ring your doctor if you have any problems EG bleeding

Hope you recover well

Charlie

Does getting your tonsils removed hurt?

It wont hurt while they are removing them as you will probably be knocked out with drugs. it will however hurt to talk and even swallow afterwards

no it does not...but you can't speak for a few days...and you'll only be able to have soup, water and ice cream for a week...it is worth it...I haven't had a sore throat in 20 years

I'm 14 and i had my tonsils out YESTERDAY. i went in at 8am, i had to answer a few questions but then at 10am, they took me down to the operating room. they put "magic" cream on my hand to stop you from feeling the injection. i felt the injection, but it didn't hurt, which i was amazed about. before i knew it, i was being told to wake up. as soon as i woke up, i sat up and was eating and drinking! the nurses were amazed at how quickly i recoverd. i even ate jam sandwiches. by 5pm, i was back home, i ate pasta. it didn't hurt, it feels quite nice to eat and swallow. i wasnt in much pain yesterday, and I'm still not today. i woke up alot in my sleep lastnight, but i took a drink of water to bed, and whenever i woke up, i had a few sips of that and then just drifted back to sleep. I've lost my apertite, but i still eat.. just to keep the muscules in my throat working. i don't find it hard to eat, as long as you eat them in small sections. cold milk on your throat really helps, i found that it sooths your throat. so far, so good. don't let any bad comments put you off, because I'm only 14, and I'm such a wimp.i'd cry over a paper cut, but honestly, this isn't pain! thankyou, Emma x

(thank you so much Emma i am happy there are people out there for who it doesnt hurt too much, i hope that's me! i have read so many bad stories about tonsillectomies and i was being very very dissuaded. thank youuu)

When you have your tonsiles are taken out can you smoke?

i recently had a tonsillectomy and threw in a pinch the very same day. since there is really no contact with your throat it should be ok. the only issue would be is that since your constantly spitting your mouth throat is drying out and could crack and bleed. so if you do decide to throw a pinch in make sure you are sipping on some kind of liquid as well and dont swallow any of the dip obviously because it can irritate your throat.

What does it cost to have a tonsillectomy without insurance?

My daughter is getting hers removed and I was told that the doctor's fee would be around $400 and the facility fee would be around $5000 to $6000 dollars. We have insurance with $800 deductible and then pay 70%. Once insurance negotiates facility fee down about 50% our out of pocket would be between $1500 and $2000. BCBS of NC estimates are very similar.

Is it common to vomit after tonsillectomy?

While it is not considered "normal" to vomit following oral surgery, it is a complication that is anticipated. Some people will react this way because of either the anesthetics or from swallowing blood during the surgery.

If the surgeon planned to use sedation as part of the procedure, you were told to not eat or drink anything for several hours prior to the surgery. This was to prevent you from aspirating stomach contents into your lungs if you vomited during the procedure.

Once the anesthetics have all been metabolized by the liver within a day or so, you should be feeling fine. If you continue to vomit or bleed, notify your surgeon and keep him/her apprised of your situation. Follow their instructions.

Why is it a good idea to have your tonsils removed?

Tonsils tend to harbor bacteria and other organisms and are usually linked with the adenoids. When either one, or both, are removed, people have reported that they don't snore as loudly and get a better night's rest. They have also reported that they don't become ill as often. Immediately after the tonsils are removed, there is expected bleeding that will occur. If you lay on your side, the bleeding will not trickle down your throat and cause possible clotting or drainage to the stomach.
