The Tony for Best Book of a Musical went to Robert L. Freedman in 2014. He wrote the book for the musical A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder.

Maya Angelou has never won a Tony Award, but she was nominated for the Best Supporting (now called Featured) Actress in a Play Tony in 1973 for her work on the play "Look Away."

On June 8, 2014, Audra McDonald received a sixth Tony Award, surpassing five-time winners Angela Lansbury and the late Julie Harris for the most competitive wins by an actress. The 2007 Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical Tony went to David Hyde Pierce. He received the award for his performance as Lieutenant Frank Cioffi in Curtains.

The 2003 Best Musical Tony went to Hairspray. The music was written by Marc Shaiman, and the book was written by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Hairspray opened on August 15, 2002 at the Neil Simon Theatre.

She won the Featured Actress in a Play award for "Blithe Spirit" (2009) and was nominated for Featured Actress in a Musical for "A Little Night Music" (2010).

Harris, who died August 24, 2013 at the age of 87, won Tonys for "I Am a Camera" (1952), "The Lark" (1956), "Forty Carats" (1969), "The Last of Mrs. Lincoln" (1973) and "The Belle of Amherst" (1977). She also was honored with a special Tony for Lifetime Achievement in the Theater. She remains the most nominated actress ever, with 10 nominations.

McDonald, who has received six Tonys in eight nominations, has now won in every Tony category for an actress. She previously won Leading Actress in a Musical for "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess" (2012). She won Featured Actress in a Musical awards for "Carousel" (1994) and "Ragtime" (1998), as well as Featured Actress in a Play honors for "Master Class" (1996) and "A Raisin in the Sun" (2004). She was nominated for Leading Actress in a Musical for "Marie Christine" (1999) and "110 in the Shade" (2007).

The 2005 Best Scenic Design of a Musical Tony went to Michael Yeargan. He received the award for his scenic design for The Light in the Piazza.

The 2011 Tony for Best Revival of a Musical went to the production of Anything Goes. The musical originally debuted on Broadway in 1934.

Frankie Michaels is the youngest winner of a Tony Award. He received the award for his performance as Patrick Dennis in Mame, and won the award just a month after his 11th birthday.

However, in 2013, the four actors who played Matilda in Matilda the Musical received a special Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre. Two of these actors were under 11 at the time they received the award: Sophia Gennusa was 9, and Oona Laurence was 10. Since this award was noncompetitive and simply in recognition of their work in Matilda, Frankie Michaels remains the youngest performer to win a Tony Award.

The Tony award is actually named after a woman named Antoinette Perry who was an actress, director, producer and co-founder of the American Theatre Wing. She died in 1946.
