Cole threw away the fur, because he didn't need to prove anything and wanted Garvey and Edwin to trust him, showing them the fur would have proven to both of them that he did see the spirit bear, but Cole wants to show that his word should be good enough.

The antagonist would definitely be Cole himself because he is the only one stopping him from wanting to change, and be able to control his anger and forgive.

Nobody believed that he saw The Spirit Bear. While he is sitting on a dock by an ocean he remembers the hair he pulled from the bear. His original thought is that he can show it to people so that they will believe that he did in fact see a Spirit Bear. Then he realizes something. It doesn't matter weather they believe him or not. he knows hes not lying. He then tosses the hair in the ocean.

In chapter 8 of "Touching Spirit Bear," Cole found the feeling of regret more unbearable than the physical pain he was experiencing. He realized that his actions had consequences that were hurting others, and this realization caused him emotional distress.

He is scared that he could have died when he got mauled and that's what changed him. He wasn't ready to give up his life yet.
