I wonder if it is because the Prius' regenerative braking system slows the car which means the brake pads are used less than a normal car.

I have a 2002 Prius and ran out of gas. The car gave several warning lights, shuddered from the loss of power, then the computer switched to full battery power. I drive it another 3 miles at 60 mph to a gas station. After filling the tank, the warning lights went away and the car has had no ill effects from the experience.

The Prius is not the most fuel efficient car. the Honda insight is the most fuel efficient car today at 65 mpg, prius only gets 55 mpg in 2008; however the insight only has 2 seats and 2 doors; the Prius 5 seats and 4 doors, big difference.
