Christopher Columbus is the first known European to reach Trinidad, on July 31, 1498. He saw nearby Tobago, but didn't touch land there. Carnival in Tobago and Trinidad is a blend of two points of origin: the festival heritage from West African countries, and the two days of Christian celebrations before Ash Wednesday and the dietary prohibitions of Lent. The former was brought by enslaved Africans, the latter by European settlers, in the 18th century. So Europe contributed the religious theme of two meatful days, in preparation for 40 meatless; and the social themes of costume dress, masks, and refined socializing. And West Africa contributed the boisterous, colorful, exuberant, joyous dancing, music-playkng, and singing in the streets.

Sir Ellis Emmanuel Innocent Clarke, was the second and last Governor-General of Trinidad and Tobago and the first President of Trinidad and Tobago. Clarke was one of the main architects of Trinidad and Tobago's 1962 Independence constitution.He attended Christian Bothers School then attended ST. Mary's collage. sir Ellis suffered a massive stroke on November 24th 2010 and never recovered, he died December 30th 2010 two days after his birthday. he was a great man and shall be missed, this is a great loss for all Trinidadians

Carnival occurs the Monday and Tuesday before ash Wednesday and is a cultural celebration including calypso music, costumes, dancing and food and drink. A festive parade is held the Monday of Carnival and limbo and stick fighting are also amongst the celebratory activities.

Columbus rediscovered Trinidad on Tuesday 31st of July 1498 on his third voyage from Seville. He was forced to take a more southerly route to avoid a hostile French Fleet and this led him into the doldrums. While drifting in the still heat of the equator his water barrels burst and his food rotted. It was in this situation that Columbus sighted the Trinity Hills or the Three Sisters on the southern coast of Trinidad. To Columbus it must have seemed providential as he was down to his last casket of water. There were already the Carib and Arawaks who inhabited the island at the time of his arrival.

The flagship of Ferdinand Magellan's expedition, the caravel Trinidad, was captured by the Portuguese in the Maluku Islands (Moluccas) and sailed to Ternate Island, where the sails and rigging were removed. The vessel eventually sank there after a storm broke it up.
