Despite its age these bills are quite common among collectors. Most of them are only worth about 25¢ above face value.

There are no 1952-dated bills. If it's from 1953, its value would be five dollars. If circulated they have no extra value beyond novelty. If uncirculated then they do have extra value beyond the original five dollar value.

I cannot find any references to any denomination of silver certificate issued with that date. Could you provide better information, including a description of your bill?

Current US bills (notes) weigh exactly one gram regardless of denomination. There are 454 grams (rounded to the nearest whole number) in one US pound. Therefore, one pound of US $20 bills would be worth $9,080!

The U.S. did not issue any $1 silver certificates dated 1953.

It is not particularly rare. A recent Blackbook lists values from $4.50 to $60 depending on condition. A star note in uncirculated goes to $550. == ==

The star in the serial number indicates that the bill is a replacement for a regular series bill which didn't pass quality control when printed. There are many error bills available that were misprinted, folded, mis-inked, etc. If those bills had been detected before release they would have been replaced with a star bill. The serial number of the star bill is not in series with the bill that it replaces. Although some strive to collect star bills, there is no particular numismatic value to them except as my be derived from an unusual serial number or some other quirk. For instance, an error on a star bill would be a real find since it is hand selected to replace a damaged bill.

Alignment errors on U.S. currency vary significantly in value. If the image is still all within the borders of the paper it's considered a minor error and is generally worth very little above face value if anything. However, if the printing is far enough off that part of the image of another bill is visible, it's much rarer and could sell for $200 to $600 depending on the extent of misalignment. You would have to take the bill to a couple of dealers who specialize in error currency to get competing estimates.

Also, as you've seen in many others' postings, a bill's serial number almost never affects its value. A bill's date, seal color, condition, and series letter are the important factors.

My guess is that it was exposed to some chemical that affected the blue component of the green ink used in that series.

As a child I left a $1 bill in my pants pocket. It went through the wash (money laundering??) and turned bright blue.

The old $10 note, no longer issued. BTW, the car was not any special model. It sort of looked like a 1920's Ford but was intentionally depicted as a generic vehicle so that no manufacturer could claim that the government was promoting their products.

Please see the attached link. Also, your bill is NOT a printing error. The motto was not added to bills until the late 1950s during a period of national pride / hysteria against so-called "Godless communism".

Overprints such as you describe can be quite valuable. Without inspection it's not possible to give an exact amount, but many overprints sell in excess of $100. Your best bet would be to have it appraised by a dealer or other expert who specializes in error currency.

Silver certificates were issued up till the early 1960s. The last ones were $1 bills printed as part of the 1957 series so they'll have that year followed by a small "B" to indicate when they were actually issued. At that time it was possible to exchange them for $1 in silver metal or coins, but when the price of silver skyrocketed the government stopped the practice. The bills are technically still legal tender at face value but are worth somewhat more to collectors.
