You start at a grade and increase in steps with time. If you get promoted you go up in grade. Air Marshalls do not use the standard GS grading system you may be familiar with. They use an "SV" grading system, which is a system of discrete grades with pay ranges that differ from GS pay ranges. These can range from 25,000 yearly to 149,000 yearly. Like if someone goes into witness protection the Us Marshall's have to hide them and if the peoples location is compromised they have to do everything in their power to keep the person safe and unharmed. Another job of the Us Marshall is if someone escapes from prison or something of the sort the Us Marshall's have to help look for them, so that the public wont get hurt.

I believe you have to have at least a bachelors degree in criminal justice 3 years of related work experience and one year in law enforcement, but if you got good grades in college both of those requirements can be waived.

Federal courts do a lot of things. They hear cases just like state courts, but operate in a different system. They are allowed to hear different kinds of cases than state courts (like if the issue is about the constitution). Also, if the parties in a case are citizens of different states (this is called "diversity") the case is started in a federal court system.

A federal indigtment could warrant a US Marshal hold. If you were in jail for a petty crime, but it involved US money, drugs AND firearms (not just one or the other), or another federal crime, the US Marshal will detain you or have you HELD until further questioning or investigation.
