Why is veterans day date changed from october November?

I have a .pdf file that gives a brief history of all of the U. S. holidays. It explains when they changed it and when they changed it back due to all the complaints they received, but it doesn't give a clue as to why. It was part of the same act that moved Columbus Day (Oct. 12), Memorial Day (May 30) and Washington's Birthday (Feb. 22) to Mondays, but why they didn't make it the second Monday of November is beyond me. (I also never understood why they made it so that "Washington's Birthday" never falls on Washington's birthday.)

Why are red poppies a symbol of remembrance?

Red poppies symbolise remembrance.

The story goes that, following one of the bloodiest battles of World War I, in the fields of Flanders in western Europe, when the ground was completely churned up and muddied, thousands of red poppies sprang up. The seeds had lain dormant in the soil and, after being aerated with the churning of the soil from the soldiers' boots and fertilized with their blood, the poppies grew abundantly, springing forth new life from death.

This is why poppies are worn on Remembrance Day (commemorating Armistice Day) as well as ANZAC Day in Australia and New Zealand and on other solemn occasions when we remember the soldiers who fought or even gave their lives for our freedom.

Another reason poppies came to such prominence in association with World War I is because of how they were immortalized in that most famous poem of WWI, In Flanders Fields, written by John McCrae, a Canadian surgeon attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade. This poem is spoken at memorial services everywhere on both ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day and remains one of the most famous Australian War poems ever written.

U.S. holiday celebrated on November 11, honouring veterans of the U.S. armed forces and those killed in battle. Originally called Armistice Day, it began as a commemoration of the ending of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918. After World War II it was recognized as a day to pay tribute to all service members, and in 1954 it was designated as Veterans Day. It is usually observed with parades, speeches, and flowers placed on military graves and memorials. The holiday is called Remembrance Day in Canada and Remembrance Sunday (on the Sunday nearest to November 11) in Britain.

Federal Holiday

As a federal holiday, Veterans Day is always celebrated on November 11. If that date falls on a Sunday, the following Monday becomes a federal holiday, and the various celebrations will be divided between the two days. If the date falls on a Saturday, the preceding Friday may be designated as the leave day for federal government employees.

Where is armistice day celebrated?

Armistice Day was the day the Armistice was put in effect in World War I. It was agreed that fighting would cease on the 11th minute of the 11 th hour of the 11th month in 1918 (11:11 AM on Nov 11). That time was set to allow time for both sides to send word to their battle commanders. For many years after, every succeeding 11 Nov was observed in honor of the Armistice and of those who fought in the War, at least among the many countries who were on the winning side.

In many countries, the name of the observance was changed from Armiscite Day to Remembrance Day. In the United States, it became Veterans' Day after World War II produced a crop of verteans with little or no connection ti World War I.

In general, an Armistce is an agreement between waring sides to stop the fighting, but is not an agreement to make peace, nor is it necessarily an indication of victory by one side or surrender of another. In the case of World War I, however, it was the first step in the process of German and Austrian surrender to their opponents.

In 1921, a group of French widows visited him at the British Legion Headquarters. they had brought with them some poppies they had made, and suggested selling them as a means of raising money.

; In Flanders Fields the poppies blow ; Between the crosses, row on row ; That mark our place; and in the sky ; The larks, still bravely singing, fly ; Scarce heard amid the guns below.

; We are the Dead. Short days ago ; We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, ; Loved and were loved, and now we lie, : In Flanders Fields. ; Take up our quarrel with the foe ; To you from failing hands we throw ; The torch; be yours to hold it high. ; If ye break faith with us who die ; We shall not sleep, though poppies grow : In Flanders Fields. ; John McCrae 1915

The most recent and enduring tradition began in WWI when John McCrae wrote the poem that appears above. McCrae was a Canadian who enlisted to help the allies in the war. He was made Medical Officer upon landing in Europe. During a lull in the battle with the nub of a pencil he scratched on a page from his dispatch book. The poem found its way into the pages of Punch magazine. By 1918 the poem was well known throughout the allied world. Moina Michael, an American woman, wrote these lines in reply. We cherish too, the Poppy red

That grows on fields where valor led,

It seems to signal to the skies

That blood of heroes never dies She then adopted the custom of wearing a red poppy in memory of the sacrifices of war and also as a symbol of keeping the faith. A French women, Madam Guerin, visiting the United States, learned of the custom and took it one step further. When she returned to France she decided to hand make the red poppies and sell them to raise money for the benefit of the orphaned and destitute women and children in war torn areas of France. This tradition spread to Canada, The United States and Australia and is still followed today. The money collected from the sale of poppies goes to fund various veterans programs.
