He may not have been schizophrenic at all. Different theories have emerged through the years, that he suffered from lead poisoning (from the lead-based paints he used), bipolar disorder, overuse of absinthe, syphilis, and even porphyria. He was treated for epilepsy, and suffered seizures through the years; some of his symptoms could have been side-effects of the medication he was given.

Most of his best-known works were produced during his final two years, amid the recurrent bouts of mental illness which led to his eventual suicide at the age of 37. Their lifelong friendship is documented in numerous letters they exchanged from August 1872 onwards.

I have no idea what that previous answer was all about. I assume you mean "Cafe Terrace at Night in Arles?" I believe it is a rendition of The Last Supper. The central figure is "serving" the 12 diners around him (including the one in the shadow of the door on the left...ie Judas). Furthermore, there is the form of a crucifix in the window behind the Christ figure.

You're thinking of absinthe, sometimes known as the Green Fairy because of its brilliant green color. It's made primarily of wormwood, anise, and fennel, but contains other herbs as well. It is bottled without added sugar, so it is not a liqueur in the strictest sense. It is traditionally served in a special glass, which has a bulb at the bottom to indicate the proper amount. A special slotted spoon is set over the top of the glass and a sugar cube is set on the spoon. Cold water is then poured slowly into the glass over the sugar cube until it dissolves and the drink is diluted 3:1 or 5:1. This is called louching the absinthe. During this process, some of the plant compounds come out of solution, releasing flavor into the drink and thickening its mouth feel. Because of the supposed hallucinogenic properties of absinthe, which are due to the chemical thujone in wormwood, it is heavily regulated in many parts of the world. Regulations vary from country to country, and often are focused on importation rather than possession or consumption.

I believe Van Gogh appears to have traits of AS with schizoid bridging. AS in a genetic sense may have links to bipolar and schizophrenia as well as autism, and in schizoid bridging situations the sensory enhancement is linked to a distorted view of reality. People with AS that I have met appear to experience details much like an impressionist painting or a pixelated TV set. The greater the impairment of sensory filters, the greater the intensity of this experience. However, if you look at Van Gogh's work there is a distortion beyond this indicating an experience of dynamism or movement. His detail granularity is "moving" much like the descriptions of people with schizophrenia, hence the bridging trait. Additionally, he experienced depression, an inability to relate his experience to NTs, and an experience of not following social conventions creating isolation not to mention his savant brilliance in his artistic expression and spacial logic. My opinion.
