Why do Catholics pray to Mary for intercession when you are able to go through Christ to the Father. Why not just pray to whom Mary prayed?

We Catholics do not in ANY WAY believe that the Virign Mary is equal to God, but she does have the most unique relationhsip with God that ever existed. The Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus Christ, the Son in the Trinity. Jesus must pay special attention to His own mother's pleas, as He was the best son ever to live and because honoring one's parents is commanded in the Old Testament.

Who built the Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe?

Before contact with Europeans was made, the site was an important pilgrimage site for worshipers of the Aztec goddess Coatlicue. After Spanish conquistadors destroyed it in 1521, they built a small chapel in the site of the former temple. It then became a basilica after the vision of the Lady of Guadalupe on December 12, 1531; the old basilica was commended to architect Pedro de Arrieta (? - 1738) and built in 1695. Successive additions were built, including several chapels and temples. The last, modern structure was built in 1976 by Mexican architects Jose Luis Benlliure, Pedro Ramirez Vazquez, Alejandro Schoenhofer and Javier Garcia Lascurain with help from friar Gabriel Chavez de la Mora.

Does putting a statue of the Virgin Mary in your window make nice weather for an important outdoor event?

Unfortunately, no. The statues of the Virgin and the saints are intended to help us call to mind God's love for us, nothing more. No statue has any power over the weather or anything of that nature. However, it wouldn't hurt to ask Our Lady (the Virgin Mary) to pray on your behalf for nice weather.

Why did an angel put a baby inside the Virgin Mary?

Which gospel tells us of the angel's visit to Virgin Mary?

The Gospel of Luke is the gospel that speaks of the angel Gabriel's visit to Mary. In Matthew's Gospel, we are told through the angel telling Joseph that Mary conceived through the power of the Holy Ghost, what took place, but are not given the full story of Mary's encounter and message from the angel as we are given in Luke's Gospel.

Is Anne the mother of Mary?

The Christian Bible never names Mary's mother. But Mary's father is named in Luke 3:23. It says, "Joseph was the son of Heli." Joseph was Mary's husband's name.

This could seem to contradict Matthew 1:16 that says that Joseph was the son of Jacob. These chapters follow two different chronologies. But since women weren't as well respected in the day, the Luke 3 chronology starts off with Joseph being the son of Heli, not Mary.

Matthew 1 and Luke 3 trace two different people. Their genealogies meet up with King David, and are the same beyond that. Heli was Mary's father, but we don't know who her mother is.

Catholic Answer:

Apocryphal writings and tradition confirm that Anne was the mother of Mary.

To commit adultery one would have to have sex with the woman. This did not happen. God simply willed for Mary to carry his divine son and it happened.

Who was the first to teach that sex was evil and that salvation was possible only through the intercession of the Virgin Mary?

Both of these views are commonly and incorrectly attributed to the Catholic Church. According to the Church, sex, when it occurs as an expression of love between husband and wife as it was intended, is very good. God created sex, so it cannot be inherently evil; however, using it in ways it was not intended is evil. The Church's view on Mary's role in salvation is summarized in paragraph 2674 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church: "Jesus, the only mediator, is the way of our prayer; Mary, his mother and ours, ...'shows the way' (hodigitria), and is herself 'the Sign' of the way."

Roman Catholic AnswerThe above answer is correct. Look at it this way, without the Blessed Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ would never have entered the world and effected our salvation. Everything else aside, if you call this intercession, than it is sort of obvious why she is necessary, is it not? God did not have to save us this way, but He did. I think if you look at it this way, you will begin to understand why the Church teaches that the Virgin Mary is instrumental (NOT the cause of it) in our salvation. Jesus Christ is God and is the one mediator for men. The Blessed Virgin is called mediatrix in an entirely dependent role, she is not God, and has nothing aside from what God, in His Goodness has given her. In other words, we only think so highly of Mary BECAUSE God did first and we follow in His footsteps.

The first part of this question, "teach sex was evil" is a common teaching of many heresies throughout the centuries - which the Church has always condemned. In other words, it was a teaching of those who left the Church to found their own religion.

Why do Catholics honor Mary?

Because she was able to live her life without ever committing a sin. Without her no human vessel would have been worthy of bringing the Son of God into this world and thus no salvation for mankind.

Roman Catholic AnswerWe honor Mary because we are trying to live our lives in imitation of Jesus and both He and His Father honored her above every other human being:

"Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women." Luke 1:28

and Jesus, from the cross, gave her to each of us as our mother when He said to St. John, "Behold, thy mother." John 19:27
