They don't KNOW. They BELIEVE because:
1) The bible says she was a virgin when she conceived Jesus (most Christians)
2) Sacred tradition says she was a virgin her whole life (orthodox, roman catholic, and some Anglican christians)

When Jesus was on the cross and just before he died, he told the Apostle John that he was now her son and she was his mother. Jesus was telling John to take care of his mother. Mary also had other children but Jesus made a point of telling John to care for her.
Mary was a Middle-Eastern Hebrew or Jewish woman, so she most likely had black or brown hair. If her hair was red or blond, it would have mentioned in the Gospels. King David was mentioned in the Bible as being ruddy, or having reddish hair because his hair color wasn't the same color as everyone else, so if Mary's hair had been anything but dark, someon would have mentioned it.

Was the statue of the Virgin Mary really crying?
no. i saw it on tv a couple of months ago, where a similar statue was also "crying blood". it is in reality not crying, but is fake blood that is pushed out of the "tearducts" by steam and hot air, using a series of pipes that were connected to a heated plate on the old statue that i saw. if you believe the statue is really crying, sorry to burst your bubble, or if you just wanted to know, well there is your answer.
PS a lot of other statues were used in this way by the church, to make the person believe. a statue seemed to ride out on thin air above the churchgoers head when the sun set. it was just hot air and glass. the doors of another church opened by themselves to let the people in. again, just a LOT of hot air forced through tubes. (sigh) it seems people will do anything to get attention.....

Outside of private revelation, we don't know a lot about the Blessed Mother's life. Obviously, God was her best friend, as far as friends on earth are concerned, I'm sure that her Son, being her God, was her best friend. Outside of that Our Blessed Lord, and His foster-father, St. Joseph, the only friend we hear about in the canonical Scriptures is St. Elizabeth.

What direction should you face the Virgin Mary statue?
It does not matter as there are no pronouncements from the Vatican or in Church Tradition on which direction statues should face. However, it is Church tradition that Mass is said, and inferred to an extent, that we should pray, towards the East, towards the rising sun, as a symbol of Christ's Resurrection. So by that logic the statues would face west. None of this is binding however, except for the building of churches which always has the congregation (and before Vatican II, the Priest) facing east.
