What type of heterotroph is a vulture?
Vultures are classified as scavenging heterotrophs, specifically as obligate scavengers. They primarily feed on carrion, which is the decaying flesh of dead animals. By consuming this food source, vultures play a crucial role in the ecosystem by helping to clean up dead matter and prevent the spread of disease. Their specialized digestive systems allow them to safely consume decomposed material that might be harmful to other animals.

How can you identify a turkey vulture when its flying?
You'll see a large bird flying in the sky, but it can be anything: hawk, crow, raven, or a vulture...
To distinguish what it is:
Turkey vultures are large dark colored birds with a wingspan of nearly 6.5 feet. They are recognized by the "V" shape of their wings in flight and their teeter totter effect as they fly (they sort of rock side to side in an awkward balance) This V shape is called a dihedral.
If you are close enough, you might be able to see the distinctive red head of the vulture.
Also, on the underside of the wing, you'll notice a light grey color band on the edge of the feathers. This is a good way to recognize the Turkey Vulture.
