OP, I hope you got some good help with your question. I have always liked that particular Kandinsky. I read recently that much of his work then was inspired by music, which i found interesting.
Take a look at the Museum of Modern Art's show on "Inventing Abstract". It says that the Farbstudie (Circles.....) was done in watercolor, gouache and crayon on paper (multimedia). It is also housed in an art gallery in Munich, Germany. Enjoy!
