In all likelihood the greatest pollution of water is fecal wastes from animals, people and vegetation fertilizer. While there are plants that treat some human toilets, most of the world's wastes goes into the water untreated.

There are many kinds of environmental pollution, such as air pollution, land pollution, water pollution and noise pollution.

All un-natural pollution is caused by human beings, there are too many people on the planet for the planet to support and our natural and industrial waste is destroying (polluting) the natural environment of our planet.

We can take steps to try and process our natural waste products and to clean up our industrial effluents but in the long run unless we do something to reduce the numbers of humans on our planet, we will destroy our environment to the extent that it will no longer be fit for human life and our species will die off.

Acidic and alkaline pollutants can damage the tissues in the mouth and digestive tract, killing cells and causing trauma.

Toxins like arsenic and cyanide can cause rapid death by killing cells, Cyanide, for instance, bonds to red blood cells, making them useless for transporting oxygen and killing the animal by asphyxiation.

Most minor pollutants cause minor effects like dihorrea and vomiting, but these can also kill as they cause severe dehydration.

If the pollutant is biological, like bacteria, these cause illnesses like gastroenteritis and other infections.

Water pollution is known as the most harmful, and serious environmental problems the Earth has. With it, it harms the areas of water of which contain thousands of sea life. Not only that, but as humans, it can also create such diseases to harm the human body's inside.

Do not wait for governments or your neighbor to clean up the pollution for you.

If you cannot legally clean up a particular pollution, then you can create awareness with websites, videos and such to make other humans embarrassed to continue their filthy polluting habits.

There are personal devices and equipments to clean up air pollution and water pollution, so if each person obtains an anti-pollution device and/or picks up trash from the walkways and/or waterways, then there will be no more visual pollution.

The important thing is to not wait for someone else to clean up the visual pollution you see... waiting is not the answer.

Water Pollutants and their Long Term Effects

Pesticides
2,4,5-T (trichlorophenoxy acetic acid, which contains the impurity dioxin), 2,4-D (dichlorophenoxyaceticacid) are the two common pesticide components that cause water pollution. The effects of pesticides on living things are mostly chronic. It reduces the competence of our immune system, because of which, we are easily prone to various diseases. The fish in the water are susceptible to cancer and tumors due to the presence of harmful pesticides.

Elemental Pollutants
The most harmful and toxic elements that affect the water bodies are heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, iron and mercury and they also hinder the transportation of fluids through the cell wall. They also immobilize enzymes as they have strong affinity for sulfur bonds present in enzymes. These substances can produce physiological poisoning by getting accumulated over the tissues of water creatures. The toxic effects of mercury are neurological damage, birth defects, and chromosome breakage. Arsenic is one of the most important water polluting agents as it is a carcinogen (cancer causing agent). Apart from cancer, it also leads to circulatory problems and respiratory problems.

Inorganic Pollutants
The inorganic pollutants that cause adverse effects on water bodies are as follows:
Cyanide exists in water as hydrogen cyanide, and can cause nerve damage and thyroid problems.
Ammonia is formed during microbial degradation of biomass and organic matters. The caustic nature of ammonia, damages gills of fish.
Hydrogen sulfide which evolves from geothermal waters, and wastes from paper and textile mills, causes nervous system poisoning.
Eutrophication and Algal Decomposition
Excess of nutrients get into the lake and other water bodies usually caused by run-off fertilizers, animal waste and sewage. This excessive growth of nutrients causes algal deposits on the rivers. After some days, the algae decomposes producing foul smell and blocks the penetration of sunlight. The oxygen content in the water reduces due to scarcity of light and causes anaerobic conditions, which is not good for the plant and animal life in the water body.

Radioactivity
Radioactive elements such as radon, radium-226, etc., can be fatal if found in water and consumed. Radon is the most significant element that can cause lung cancer when consumed in a dissolved state or inhaled in its gaseous form. Strontium-90 and tritium are radioactive elements that get dumped into water during nuclear testing. They cause genetic mutations and pose destructive effects on our genes that can pass on to future generations also.

Most of the diseases that strike human beings are water-borne. They are typhoid, cholera, paratyphoid fever, bacillary dysentery, infectious hepatitis, poliomyelitis, etc. So, in order to avoid these harmful effects, follow the ways to prevent water pollution and more importantly, drink clean and purified water and never compromise on health.

Fertilizers reach bodies of water in a variety of ways, most noticeably by rain washing the fertilizer into adjoining rivers and streams.

However, all things contain water and water is a particle carrier, so the chemicals of fertilizers are transported to large bodies of water by all means, including by humans who are eating the fertilized food.

Humans are 97% water at birth and pass through undigested fertilizer into waste delivery systems that return to the Water Cycle. Same with animals who are mostly made of water, themselves.

Ultimately, humans made fertilizer and so fertilizers start their journey from human hands and so part of that answer is: humans.

There are many forms of water pollution. Most natural. A deer that urinates into a stream has polluted it. Most people only consider man induced water pollution though when they refer to this subject though, as this is the worst form of pollution.

Man induced pollution is the most preventable and the worst in terms of length of endurance. Pouring pcb's into our water will keep life from developing or surviving for years.

Some pollution of the eco system is not avoidable without causing death of our population too! Pesticides are required by farmers to give us the food we need. Over use of pesticides causes problems by flowing into our water eco system. Some people feel we should allow millions to die and stop all pesticides.
