Your HDD failure may have just been a matter of its age. The Power-on-hours counter never stops. It keeps getting older even when it's not plugged in and not being used. The HDD warranty will only cover 3 years (in most cases) from the date of the purchase. So your "Brand new, 10 years old" PC is 7 years past the last warrantable service date. It wastes the time of others that are trying to research an answer and makes it that much more difficult for anyone to find the answers they are looking for, much less find corroborating information from multiple site sources.
