Who was the choreographer for the 1961 movie West Side Story?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The choreographer for the 1962 film version of 'The Music Man' was Onna White [March 24, 1922-April 8, 2005]. White previously had been responsible for the choreography for the stage version, in 1958. In fact, she received a Tony Award nomination for that version. Subsequently, she received a special Oscar for her choregraphy for 'Oliver!' [1968]. She was only one of two choreographers ever to receive such an honor. On the film version of 'The Music Man', she was assisted by Tom Panko [b. ca. 1926]. Panko again assisted White with 'Bye Bye Birdi' [1963].

What famous Shakespeare's play is 'West Side Story' based on?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The musical does have some truth to it. Even though it is not completely autobiographical. In the time that the musical was based on the truth was that there was friction between a growing population of Latin American immigrants. Gangs would fight eachother. West Side Story is also a version of Romeo and Juliet if you look at the story line except Maria does not die in the end.

After the movie, Smith would continue his association with West Side Story, playing the part of "Riff" in the Los Angeles production (1962) and in Tokyo, Japan (1964). 1964 was a particularly busy year for Smith, aparting from touring in Japan, he was in the Broadway musical "Anyone Can Whistle", which however, lasted only 9 performances because of bad reviews. He would also performed at the Dupont Pavilion at the 1964 New York World's Fair in the musical "The Wonderful World of Chemistry". Smith would go on to perform at nightclubs, Las Vegas shows, stage productions in the US and overseas, cabarets and has even toured internationally with his own nightclub act. He would continued to appear in films such as "Hello Dolly", "The Producers", "At Long Last Love", but often as an uncredited dancer. Who is anita in west side story?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

She dies in the Broadway version because she is shot by Diesel when leaving the candy store after telling the Jets Maria is dead.

However in the movie version she lives.

Having her live is more accurate to the original Romeo and Juliet, in which the nurse (the character Anita is based on) does not die.

The reason they did not have Maria die, though, was because it seemed like too much death, so having Anita die doesn't make much sense with that, but maybe that's why she doesn't die in the movie.

Who came up with the west side story?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The idea came about because of the surge of immigrants in the late 1940s and early 1950s in New York City. Originally the musical was supposed to be about a gang of Jewish immigrants rivalling a gang of Catholic Americans, but this plot was felt to have been seen before, and so it was changed to Americans vs. Puerto Ricans, because that idea felt much more original and relevant to the current times.

When was west side story composed?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The original concept for the show was first proposed in 1949 and Jerome Robbins and Leonard Bernstein began outlining the scenes that year, although then it was set between fighting Jewish and Catholic families.

It was called "East Side Story" during it's early development.

Because it was so controversial it was an on-again, off-again project until it 'gelled' into the form we know now in 1956.

It's first performance was August 19th, 1957 at the National Theater, Washington, D.C.

It first played Broadway September 26th, 1957.
