How do you get the professional rights to Wicked?

Asked by Wiki User

Singing, dancing and acting talent are what is needed to become part of the cast of the musical "Wicked."

Specifically, there are roles for those who seek main character interpretations as well as for those who prefer supporting activities. Either way, singing and dancing skills are needed for the solo and group dances and songs in the ground-breaking, award-winning musical. Strong lungs and fluid movements also are needed for the non-singing, non-dancing segments, which involve clear articulation and effective emoting in front of live audiences.

How long has she lived when Elphaba dies?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In the musical 'Wicked', Elphaba is a freshman in college. We therefore assume she is around 18. But, she is three years older than her sister, Nessarose. It is both their first year at college, so she could be around twenty-one, or Nessa could go to college early at fifteen or sixteen, meaning Elphaba is eighteen or nineteen.

However, in the second act, we see it is much later after she had 'Defied Gravity' and turned against the Wizard. This could be days, months, or even years afterwards.

Why is the school named 'Shiz' in 'Wicked'?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Shiz University is the name of the school in both the book and stage versions of 'Wicked'. It's the place where Elphaba Thropp, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, meets Galinda. Galinda later changes her name to Glinda, and becomes known as the Good Witch and the most powerful sorceress in the beautiful, enchanted, magical lands of Oz.

What is a similar musical to Wicked?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The type of music that's featured in the musical 'Wicked' is described as more like a thematic film score. In the musical's traditional score, each song showcases new melodies and motifs. But in the thematic film score, melodies and motifs overlap across songs. This is particularly true of the musical 'Wicked'. One example is the motif that overlaps in and unites 'Dancing Through Life' and 'What Is This Feeling'. Another is Elphaba's theme, which brings together 'As Long As You're Mine' and 'No One Mourns the Wicked'. Still another is the 'Over the Rainbow' influenced 'Unlimited' interlude that links 'Defying Gravity' and 'The Wicked Witch of the East'.

Why is Elphaba's name Elphaba in 'Wicked'?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Elphaba is the phonetic pronounciation (el-pha-ba) of L.F.B., which are the initials of Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 5, 1919), original creator of the Oz book series.

Specifically, Elphaba's first name, and her last name of Thropp, were given to her by Gregory Maguire (b. June 9, 1954). Baum had left her nameless, other than the title of Wicked Witch of the West. Maguire changed all that, in 1995, with his novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West."

Who is Glinda's Husband in Wicked?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Melena and Frexspar are presented as Elphaba Thropp's parents in the book and stage versions of 'Wicked'. The aristocratic Melena is unhappy in her marriage to her missionary minister husband. But she manages to survive by turning to extramarital affairs. One such affair is with the Wizard of Oz, who gives her a bottle of a green liquid. And, interestingly enough, Elphaba is born with green skin, which is definitely absent from Melena's and Frexspar's family lines.

Asked by Wiki User

Thus far, there have been 21 actresses who have played the role of Elphaba Thropp, by way of a total of 10 productions of Wicked by Stephen Lawrence Schwartz [b. March 6, 1948], who based his musical on the earlier novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire [b. June 9, 1954]. The productions thus far have been those on Broadway; as part of the 1st and 2nd National Tours; and in Chicago, London, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Stuttgart, Melbourne, and San Francisco. Every production other than that in Tokyo had standby, or alternate, actresses to the role of Elphaba. Many went on to hold the role in their own right. But 15 thus far are down on record as participating only in the standby or alternate status.

Boq is in love with Galinda, but ends up unhappily married to Nessarose. He is a very important and very rich Munchkin in the book version of The Wizard of Oz. But in the musical, Nessarose causes him to become the subsequent Tin Woodman of The Wizard of Oz. Chistery is a monkey servant for whom Elphaba cares, because of her particular concern over the rights and well-being of animals. Dorothy Gale is a visitor to the lands and peoples of Oz. She thinks that she has killed Elphaba by throwing water on her, and thereby causing her to melt into nothingness. Dr. Dillamond is one of Elphaba's professors at Shiz University. As a goat that can talk, he's ka an Animal, as opposed to animals that can't talk. Elphaba Thropp becomes the Wicked Witch of the West of The Wizard of Oz. Although the writing of the novel and the stage of the play Wicked take place decades after the original 1900 book and 1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz, it may be seen as a prequel. But it provides a clarification on Elphaba's fate. For her supposed end in Oz is actually her beginning elsewhere with fellow student and lover, Prince Fiyero. He becomes the Scarecrow of The Wizard of Oz. Galinda Upland of the Upper Uplands becomes Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz. Madame Morrible is the headmistress of Shiz University. Melina is the mother of Elphaba and of Nessarose. She's married to Munchkinland Governor Frexpar, who is a doting father to Nessarose, and abusive stepfather to Elphaba. Nessarose Thropp succeeds her father as Governor of Munchkinland. She becomes the Wicked Witch of the East in The Wizard of Oz. Pfanny and Shen Shen are college girlfriends of Galinda. Professor Nikidik succeeds Dr. Dillamond at Shiz University. The Wizard may be the real father of Elphaba. He's a carnival huckster who becomes the Supreme Ruler of the Emerald City in The Wizard of Oz.

Who were the characters in the play wicked?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Here is a list of characters (info borrowed from Wikipedia):

Character[13] Voice[13] Description Elphabamezzo-soprano with belt An intelligent, misunderstood, compassionate girl with green skin who, while a student at Shiz University, finds an unexpected friend in Glinda and falls in love with Fiyero. Her rebellion against the Wizard, after finding out he has no magical powers and that he is oppressing the talking Animals of Oz, frames her into the name "The Wicked Witch Of The West". After feeling hopeless, even after all her good deeds and intentions, she realizes she will never be able to clear her name and gives in to the name that the Wizard has created for her. Glinda soprano Beautiful and ambitious, Glinda initially seems vain and superficial, though her friendship with Elphaba reveals more depth in her character. She later changes her name from Galinda to Glinda, ostensibly in honor of Doctor Dillamond's persistent mispronunciation, but more likely to impress Fiyero. Glinda is a social climber and seizes the opportunity to join the Wizard despite his fraudulence, who decrees that she be known as "Glinda the Good." Glinda unwittingly sets into motion the events that lead to Boq becoming the Tin Woodman, and Elphaba's sister Nessarose being killed by Dorothy's farmhouse. The Wizard baritone The illegitimate dictator (and non-wizard) of Oz appears fatherly and brands himself a "sentimental man," but he is secretly the driving force behind the oppression of Oz's talking Animals. The Wizard realizes at the end of the story that he is in fact the father of Elphaba after Glinda presents him with the green elixir bottle Elphaba always carried around. The Wizard had given Elphaba's mother the bottle when they had an affair while Elphaba's "father", the Governor of Munchkinland, was away on business. Madame Morrible contralto The sinister headmistress of Shiz University who is revealed to be working in collaboration with the Wizard of Oz. Morrible has a speciality for controlling the weather. Fiyero tenor A handsome prince with a reputation for "Dancing Through Life", who is initially attracted to Galinda. That quickly diminishes after his choice to have a relationship with Elphaba. Fiyero is initially shallow and self-absorbed, but his encounters with Elphaba cause him to re-evaluate his way of thinking. Elphaba transforms Fiyero into the Scarecrow, saving him from a painful death when Ozian guards take him away with plans to be beat him until he tells them where Elphaba went. Nessarose mezzo-soprano Elphaba's beautiful but crippled younger sister who was forced to be dependent on Elphaba to take care of her. The apple of her father's eye, but always isolated from society, Nessarose is a sensitive soul who wants other people to see beyond her wheelchair. The Munchkin Boq claims to be different, and Nessarose becomes unhealthily attached to him, although in reality he is merely trying to score points with Glinda, who simply palmed him off onto Nessa to deflect his unwanted advances. When Boq begins to resent being with Nessarose, she thinks it's because she herself is "not right", and after succeeding her father as the Governor of Munchkinland, she decrees that Boq be her right-hand man, in the hope that he will grow to love her if she keeps him with her long enough. As her insecurities grow, Nessarose turns into a dictator, mandating that no Munchkin is free to leave Munchkinland, in a bid to hold onto Boq. This causes her subjects to call her "The Wicked Witch of the East", just as her sister Elphaba is known as the "Wicked Witch of the West". When finally given the power to walk, Nessarose is thrilled at the prospect of having a normal romantic relationship with Boq, only to learn that he is still infatuated with Glinda and intends to go after her. Nessarose's last attempt to stop Boq from leaving fails miserably, and with neither her father nor her sister around, she is left with no one but "the girl in the mirror". Her enchanted shoes which enabled her to walk at the tail end of her life are all that's left of her following her tragic death. Boq tenor The socially awkward, mousy, middle-class Munchkin Boq is obsessed with Glinda at Shiz University. Glinda conveniently foists this unwanted nuisance of a suitor upon Nessarose, who is instantly smitten by him. Foolishly hoping to impress Glinda, Boq feigns romantic interest in Nessarose and leads her on. When he first tries to leave, Nessarose thinks it's because of her crippled condition, and in her capacity as the Governor of Munchkinland, she mandates that he become her right-hand man, in the hope that he'll grow to love her if she keeps him with her long enough. After Nessa is given the power to walk, Boq believes he is free to go back to pursuing Glinda, whom he stupidly continues to obsess over. When Nessarose tries to stop him, Boq threatens her with a knife, at which point she desperately tries to cast a spell on him to claim the "heart" he says he "lost" to Glinda. The spell is miscast, causing Boq's heart to literally shrink, prompting Elphaba to turn him into a Tin Man who "won't need" a heart to continue living. This in turn quite literally leaves Boq, now the Tin Man, with an axe to grind with Elphaba, believing that she turned him into tin as an act of wickedness rather than mercy. Doctor Dillamond baritone A Goat, and the only Animal professor left at Shiz University, Doctor Dillamond is a victim of the Wizard's Animal Suppression Policy. Elphaba is fond of him, but he is taken away from Shiz U after the Wizard decrees that Animals are no longer permitted to teach. Doctor Dillamond eventually loses his ability to speak altogether.

What is the costume style of the play wicked?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I'm not sure exactly what you mean but I would say that it's a comedy/drama. The style is a very powerful and different view of the story of the wizard of oz because it is seen thru Elphaba's point of view. The style could also be described as classic broadway, especially the songs. Hope that answered you question!

The dress and staging were of the time of the original movie, in the pre-World War II years (1939?). However, there were some amazing technological effects only available now.

Who wrote the book Something Wicked This Way Comes?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The complete, original sentence was 'By the pricking of my thumbs, Something wicked this way comes'. It was stated by one of the witches in Act 4 Scene 1 of the play 'Macbeth' by William Shakespeare [baptized April 26, 1564-April 23, 1616]. From Shakespeare's play to nowadays, the phrase became quite popular. For example, it was the title of a book that Raymond Douglas Bradbury [b. August 22, 1920] had published, in 1962.

Why do bubbles float?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are a few possible answers to this:

1. They don't pop, they just turn invisible.

2. They don't pop, they dissolve.

3. The pressure is to great from the outside air, causing the bubble to pop.

There are three that are possible. You pick which you like the best.

Do the witches' prophecies predict the future or do they make the future that unfolds?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

That's an interesting question. I think in the play it is just meant to be a prediction, but of course any time you predict something, then you have the chance of affecting the outcome. Anyone who hears the prediction and who changes their actions because of it could be said to be fulfilling the prophecy, or to be causing it. How much does the prediction actually cause the prediction to happen? I don't think that it is something that we can ever answer and be sure of the answer.

What are the conflicts in the musical 'Wicked'?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Where Elphaba Thropp fits into the scheme of things is the problem in both the book and the stage versions of 'Wicked'. Specifically, Elphaba doesn't fit into society because of her unusual, green tinted skin. Neither does she fit into school because of her compassion for non humans. Nor does she fit into family because of her being the biological result of her mother's extramarital affair with the Wizard of Oz.

The problem is solved, in the book and the play, by Elphaba's removal from the immediate scene. In the original book and the musical, Elphaba appears to die under a steadily fatal stream of water. But in the book and the musical, there's the possibility that she'll come back.

What is the mood of Gregory maguires wicked?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Upbeat is a way to describe the tone of the musical 'Wicked'. The play tells the story of two young women who know what they want from life. Both end up realizing their dreams, and much more in the process.

Specifically, Glinda wants to be the people's choice to rule Oz in the way that she sees that the country needs to be run. Elphaba the green skinned outcast wants to advance a worthy cause. Glinda indeed ends up with the people's respect. Likewise, Elphaba commits herself to the well being of animals.

In the process, the two young women find personal happiness. Glinda moves from being a spoiled, smug, self centered debutante to finding friendship with Elphaba, and the esteem of an entire nation. Elphaba moves from being Oz's most unpopular girl to finding true love with Fiyero, Oz's most eligible young man.

Her comments on Dr. Dillamond's breakthroughs and her conversation with Boq about the slippers, Glinda and Dorothy Gale are the closest examples of monologues by Elphaba in "Wicked."

Specifically, these two examples are from the original 1995 book edition of "Wicked." The first example occurs about one-third of the way through the story. The second takes place just past the halfway mark.
