Wind Power

Wind power is derived from the conversion of wind energy to become a useful form of energy to propel ships, make electricity or pump water. Wind is a renewable source of energy that is widely available and produces no harmful emission during operation.

What is the current use of a wind turbine?

Early uses of wind energy was generally for direct mechanical actions such as grinding or pumping. Hence the term windmill to indicate a wind powered mill.

However, virtually all modern windmills generate electricity.

It is likely that most future windmills will also be coupled to electricity production.

It is unlikely that wind energy will become the only energy source available, in part because of its somewhat unpredictability and tendency to have variations of power levels not connected to grid requirements.

There would be benefits of connecting wind energy to energy sources like hydroelectric power generation. When the wind is blowing, there would be less need for hydroelectric, and the water could be stored to some extent like a giant battery. When the wind stops, the hydroelectric energy would be used.

Another form that it could be coupled to is automobile charging... it is a little tricky because of the irregular nature of the wind energy, but perhaps by either charging a secondary battery bank, or counting on a strong nocturnal breeze it would work. Some people have suggested that auto batteries wouldn't actually need to always be "topped off", but rather they could be used to some extent as a reservoir to ameliorate peak energy uses.

Hydrogen is a form of electric energy storage that wouldn't necessarily need continuous inputs, and may someday be used in conjunction with automobile fuels.

Where to build wind turbines?

Well, its kind of obvisus to build one on a windy place for example: a hill, and some are built in the the sea. So mostly places where it is quite winddy, or where wind is likely to be.

Why wont wind energy be able to meet the energy needs?

Because the Wind is not always blowing. Wind is off and on, we need power that we know will be there when we need it such as coal. But Wind Power is still great and it is "green."

How wind turbine produce electricity?

Wind is one of our free resources and in some areas blows up to 80% of the time. The wind is used to move large propeller blades attached to a gearbox. The gearbox is connected to a turbine to produce the electrical current. The gearbox also prevents the propeller blades from going into a runaway mode.

How is wind energy obtained and used?

A wind turbine, which is installed on top of a tall tower, collects kinetic energy from the wind and converts it to electricity that is compatible with a home's electrical system. In a normal residential application, a home is served simultaneously by the wind turbine and a local utility. If the wind speeds are below the wind turbine's start up speed there will be no output from the turbine and all of the needed power is purchased from the utility. As wind speeds increase, turbine output increases and the amount of power purchased from the utility is proportionately decreased. When the turbine produces more power than the house needs, the extra electricity is sold to the utility (net metering). All of this is done automatically.

How many wind turbines would it take for it to power the electricity a power plant does?

The number of wind turbines needed would depend on various factors such as the size and capacity of the power plant, the efficiency of the turbines, and the local wind conditions. In general, it would likely require a significant number of turbines to match the electricity output of a power plant.

What is the average size of a windmill blade?

The average size of a windmill blade ranges from 35 to 45 meters (115 to 148 feet) in length.

Why do you think the turbine blades are shaped like a fan?

Turbine blades are shaped like a fan to efficiently capture wind or water energy and convert it into rotational motion. The curved shape helps the blades harness more energy from the flow of fluid, increasing efficiency and power output.

Do wind turbines produce enough power to pay for their installation?

Over time, yes, the cost of the installation and ongoing maintenance of a Wind Power Turbine can be recovered from the sale of the electricity produced. However, the length of time required is dependent on the location (available wind) and the price you receive for the power generated.

How big are the wind turbine blades?

Most commercial turbines being assembled onshore in Sweden today (2012) have blades that are about 50 meters long.

Offshore turbines have blades up to 70 meters.

An 83 meter blade was sent to a testing facility in October of 2012.

How is wind energy similar to fossil fuels?

Both wind energy and fossil fuels can be used to generate electricity. However, wind energy is a renewable resource that relies on the natural movement of air currents, whereas fossil fuels are non-renewable resources that come from the remains of ancient plants and animals. Both sources have environmental impacts, but wind energy generally has a lower impact in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and pollution compared to fossil fuels.

Do wind turbines move to face the wind?

Most do, although some systems are mounted vertically and rotate around their mast. These systems have no need to move into the wind.

What does Janey from no promises in the wind look like?

If you have the book, look on page 130. There is a great description of her on that page.

How is wind energy utilised?

wind turbines are placed to make use of wind energy, in the wind turbine an alternator having large gear mechanism is fixed , when the wind blows, the turbine moves, which in turn forces the gears to rotate, which in turn moves the alternator to generate electricity.

Do wind turbines use fossil fuel?

No, unless fossil fuel energy is used in their construction. In that case, wind turbines generate the amount energy required to make them within 6-12 months. That's the fastest of any type of energy - It takes a fossil fuel turbine about 2 years to generate the same amount of energy involved with it's construction.

Wind systems also consume fossil fuels when the wind is above the safe operation limit by placing power on the generators to prevent the blades from turning. They also consume power for a few minutes while starting to get the blades to the correct speed and sync with the grid. Despite these consumptions, wind is still a net provider of energy and they generate much more than they consume.

Why Is hydroelectric power better than wind?

Well there both two power sources that are renueable.... There both good......

How big are wind turbine generators?

A 1.5 MW turbine is 80ms in height.

A 3MW turbine is 90m in height.

The world's largest-capacity turbine, the Enercon (7.58MW) is 198m in height.

Where do they store wind energy?

Wind energy can be stored in a variety of ways. One common method is by using batteries to store excess energy generated by wind turbines when the demand for electricity is low. Another method is through pumped-storage hydropower, where excess wind energy is used to pump water to a higher elevation, and then the water is released to generate electricity when more power is needed. Additionally, some wind farms are connected to the electrical grid and feed their excess energy back into the system for use by others.

What are the disadvantage of a wind turbine?

There Aren't many disadvantages only the cement used for the base and the cost for building and transporting it.

Answer

There are very few advantages. Wind turbines are one of the most expensive forms of energy generation, made affordable only because of enormous subsidies which are then passed on to consumers as elevated energy bills. They only produce a fraction of their rated capacity for most of the time. Their energy output is completely unpredictable. In the case of the UK, none is made in the UK, so taxpayers money is used to employ foreign workers to manufacture them and to increase the profits of foreign companies.

On the other hand, if you are a landowner (paid to have them on their land), or a wind turbine manufacturer, or a wind turbine worker, then wind turbines are wonderful!

How can small wind turbine help you?

A small wind energy system can be used to augment your utility source to power appliances, lighting, and heat. These stand alone systems can be appropriate for homes or farms and can help you get on your way towards energy independence.

What are the legal requirements to install a small wind turbine on your land?

You have to go to your local government office, and obtain a permit. You then must secure the proper person with the right training to install the wind turbine on your property so they can make sure it is safely done.
