This is for a science fair. How can you test whether or not smiling or yawning is contagious?

By doing a fair test. You have to ensure that there are no external triggers that could affect your results eg testing yawning after a particularly boring seminar. A good test would be at the local mall. Have a group set up to smile at strangers and a group set up (at the other end) to yawn at strangers. Monitor their responses. If you do it on the same day you are taking a similarly representative sample ie homemakers and shopping moms. In fact you could target women at a mall and run an identical test (yawners at one end, smilers at the other) at a ball game to see if men were equally susceptible.

Of course there are problems with this. Who is smiling? Who is yawning? Do people smile back at a blue eyed, busty tester more than a black, male assessor? Are yawns contagious despite ethnicitiy or do black people respond more to black yawners and vice versa? Testing human behaviour is not an exact science!

Who do people yawn?

It is because of lack of oxygen, tiredness, or boredom. Another interesting thing is some researchers also believe that groups of the stone age men yawned to intimidate others by showing their teeth, or to show the group a sign it's time to retire or sleep. Also the people who yawn were considered less energetic and hence were protected and sheltered by the others, not allowing them to get in to any danger.

Why does a spray of water come out of mouth when yawning?

The sublingual caruncle is found under your tongue (either side of the frenulum - the small folds going from your tongue and the cavity floor).

This is where two salivary glands, the sublingual and submandibular glands, empty into the oral cavity. That is why saliva will sometimes spray out when you lift your tongue while yawning.

Why when I yawn or breathe deep do I have severe pain is on the left side Can't take a deep breath at all No cold no chest pain I have shoulder pain down into my left side I have a lap-band to?

I did some research into this and it appears as though a deficiency in Magnesium can cause the type symptoms you are mentioning. I had the same type chest pains after yawning for a number of years. The pain and frequency increases dramatically whenever I would take in large stimulates like too much caffeine or weight lifting energy supplements. My doctors told me to stop taking the energy pills so I did. However, the problem still persisted. When I researched another issue I had I came across information that seemed to tie it all together. It appears much of the pain was due to magnesium deficiency. Within a week of taking magnesium, I felt the symptom starting to quickly go away! Since taking the magnesium, it has eliminated those chest pains altogether when I yawn! I had seen the doctor several times, had ex-rays for obstructions, stopped drinking caffeinated drinks (all good things) but it still persisted until I took the magnesium supplements.

Yes, it is sort of a pass on.
