The yahrzeit candle burns during the entire roughly-24-hour date during which the

Yom Kippur is a total fast, observant Jews do not eat or drink anything for about 25 hours, from sunset on the eve of Yom Kippur to nightfall the next night. The tradition also bans wearing of leather, wearing perfume, and bathing during that period. (If someone's health is endangered, however, the fast must be broken.) The Yom Kippur liturgy is long, with special melodies that are used only once a year, penitential and confessional prayers, and the reading of the Book of Jonah. The service marking the end of Yom Kippur ends with a long blast of the Shofar, at which point, a congregation of hungry thirsty people descends on food.

How do the festivals of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur bring the Jewish community together?

The festivals of Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah both bring the Jewish community together because you do everything together throughout these two festivals. Examples of this are like going to Shul for longer than usual and spending more time doing Tefillah(praying) to God. You also try to be as nice as possible to people because you know that God is judging you so you want to be seen as good. One of the Mitzvot that I didn't mention above is Tzedaka which is giving to charity and this is something that you can do collectively by all doing a fundraising event for a chosen charity. These festivals are good because they help us to interact with each other as we normally wouldn't and it comes only once a year so we like to make the most of it. This can also be a time when the Jewish community come together because you give each other advice and want to spend time together and talk about the things you have done and give each other advice or comfort each other if you feel bad about something you have done.

The verse we say out loud is a refrain normally cried out only in heaven. The Shema is a special prayer that involves treating God with respect and announcing our belief in Him and our obedience.

What can women do if they want to fast on Yom Kippur?

If they want to fast, they fast. (While there are some mitzvot that do not apply to women such as tefillin, fasting does apply to women with the same stringency - under normal conditions - as it does men.)

Perhaps you meant to ask how would a pregnant or nursing woman fast. In those cases, the overriding consideration is one of safety. If the woman can fast with no personal danger, that should be done. A nursing woman can express some of her breast-milk before the fast, keep it frozen or refrigerated, and warm it during the fast (in a permitted manner), and use it to make sure there will be enough to feed the infant.

If there's a possibility that she won't be able to complete the fast, she may start the fast, and break it later if it becomes apparent that completing the fast would harm her.

If it's clear from the start that fasting would endanger her (or the infant), then she doesn't need to begin the fast.

In cases such as these (all of the above), a Rabbi should be consulted, since there are important further details; and because of the importance of both the fast and the safety of the people involved.
