Actually Southerners in the USA call Northerners "Yankees". "Yank(s)" is United Kingdom slang for continental USA residents. Yank is a shortened form of the word Yankee that goes back to before the Revolutionary War when the USA was little more than tributory colonies. The British viewed North Americans colonists as backwards rubes hardly even worthy of contempt, this is due to the fact that many of our early settlers were considered the refuse of Europe civilization. The song "Yankee Doodle" was originally intended as sarcasm to illustrate how foolish the titled English felt our forefathers were and the later actually adopted the song themselves during the Revolutionary War to mock the English.
