The Virgin Islands are part of the North American Numbering Plan, telephone country code +1, along with the USA, Canada, and some other islands.

The U.S. Virgin Islands use area code +1 340. Calls from the US mainland to the USVI are "one plus" domestic calls, but may or may not be included in "nationwide" calling plans. Check with your long-distance company.

The British Virgin Islands use area code +1 284 (284 = BVI on the telephone dial). Calls from the US or Canada are "one plus," but will be charged at international rates.

(The plus sign means "insert your international access prefix here." From a GSM mobile phone, you can enter the number in full international format, starting with the plus sign. The most common prefix is 00, but Japan uses 010, Australia uses 0011, and many other countries use different prefixes.)
