There are 2 states which are definitely visible but likely only 2 more.

New York and New Jersey are right there, and Connecticut and Pennsylvania are about 60 miles away, to the NE and SW respectively.

The next closest are Massachusetts to the north, Delaware and Maryland to the southeast, and Rhode Island to the east-northeast. But the closest, Massachusetts, is more than 90 miles to the north, about the same distance as Wilmington in Delaware and 20 miles farther than Philadelphia. So perhaps the reference to "five states" is to seeing Mount Everett in western Massachusetts.
