Sort of arbitrary, but normally a strait is a long sea passage between a large island and another large island or a mainland, or between two mainlands. Examples: Strait of Juan De Fuca, between Vancouver Island, Canada, and Washington state in the USA. Strait of Gibralter, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean (with Europe to the north and Africa to the south).
