Until 1991, Russia and Central Asia were part of the Soviet Union, officially known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). The USSR was a federation of multiple republics, including Russia and several Central Asian countries such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. The Soviet Union dissolved in December 1991, leading to the independence of its constituent republics.
There are a few countries that make up the Caucasus Republics. This includes Chechnya, along with Dagestan and Orissa.
Central Asia is made up of five independent republics, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan. Uzbekistan has the largest population.
