Yellow spotted salamanders, sometimes called newts, live in the eastern part of the United States and Canada. They live in the ground or under leaf litter and lay their eggs in seasonal pools in forested areas.
There are different types of spotted salamanders. Depending on the color there are many types. My personal favorite is the red spotted newt. Newts and salamanders are pretty much the same thing but newts live more in water. Salamanders also can live in the water but you will mostly find newts there. Different kinds of spotted newts/salamanders are: Black and yellow spotted, Blue spotted, and Red spotted salamanders/newts.

Yes they do, the most common salamander in NJ is probably the redbacked salamander, they look kind of like worms with legs. Also the Red Spotted Newt(brown with red spots) is common in north west Jersey, they live in ponds as adults but the juveniles are a bright red color and live on land. There are also white spotted salamanders (black with white spots).

Here is a list of some of our most common salamanders and what they eat: Spotted salamander: worms, centipedes, crickets, spiders Redback salamander: small invertebrates (these salamanders will even climb up small shrubs and other plants to search for food) Blue-spotted salamander: earthworms, slugs, isopods (potato bugs, pill bugs) Eastern red-spotted newt: insect larvae, worms, amphibian eggs and larvae, leeches (remember, newts are aquatic salamanders, salamanders that live in the water) But just to be safe, if you are considering feeding the salamander the spider, you should probaly check with an expert.
