Many of the countries in Asia and Eastern Europe have wildly different languages, and people need to be able to communicate with each other for political and commercial reasons. Thanks to the former Soviet Union (also the simple fact that Russia is geographically close to a lot of these countries), Russian became the lingua franca as opposed to some other language spoken in the region such as Polish or Uzbek.

French is still a lingua franca in many parts of Europe. Sometimes, a national language also functions as a Lingua Franca within a country, if that country has many languages.
