If you don't have a speedo cable on your front wheel, you have a speedo sensor. I believe that change was made in 2000.

a 95 harley does not use a digital speedometer. If urs has one, it is probably aftermarket modificiation.
On a 1999 Harley Heritage Classic, the speedometer sensor is located on the transmission. Specifically, it is mounted on the left side of the transmission housing, where it detects the rotation of the speedometer drive gear. This sensor sends signals to the speedometer to display the motorcycle's speed accurately. If you're having issues with the speedometer, checking this sensor and its connections is a good starting point.

To remove the speedometer sensor on a 1999 Harley Davidson 1200 Sportster, first, disconnect the battery to ensure safety. Locate the speedometer sensor, which is typically found on the side of the transmission. Use a socket or wrench to unscrew the sensor from its mounting position, then gently pull it out. Make sure to check for any wiring connections and disconnect them if necessary before fully removing the sensor.
On a 1998 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic, the speedometer sensor is typically located on the transmission. Specifically, it is mounted on the left side of the transmission, near the rear. To access it, you may need to remove the left side cover. Be sure to consult the service manual for detailed instructions and safety precautions.

On a 2001 Harley-Davidson Road King Classic, the speed sensor is typically located on the transmission. Specifically, it's mounted on the left side of the transmission case, near the speedometer drive. To access it, you may need to remove the left side cover or other components depending on the specific setup. Always consult the service manual for detailed instructions and safety precautions.
I don't think Harley has a retro fit kit to do the change, also the speedometer might not be calibrated for the XL, this speedometer runs off a speed sensor on the transmission and is sensitive. This speedometer can only be used on the FXDWG ('95-'98) Softails ('96-'98) FLHR/I ('95-'98) using retro fit Harley Davidson Part # 67418-99. Hope this helps......
The speed sensor is mounted on the right side of the transmission case below the starter.
speed sensor is located to the rear of the transmission chrome (retangular) cover. there are four bolts on the cover, if you are looking at the bike from the right side just behind the cover rear bolt is the speed sensor. loosen and remove Allen bolt with 3/16 Allen and rotate sensor just enough to pry out. it is in there snug. i just removed and cleaned my sensor. there were metal shaving. My symptoms were no speedometer , odometer, and turn signal not turning off after conmpleting turn.
