The Gotthard Base Tunnel is a rail tunnel through the Alps in Switzerland. It is currently the worlds longest tunnel, the two bores being 57.104 km and 57.017 Km (approximately 35 miles).
Tunnel breakthrough occurred on 15th October 15, 2010, the tunnel is due to open in December 2016.
Its completion pushed the Seikan Tunnel in Japan, at 53.85 Km (about 33 miles), to second place. The Gotthard Base Rail Tunnel will connect northern Europe to Italy and will shorten the travel time by over an hour. Final cost of the project is estimated at 9.8 billion Swiss francs.
