Gypsies are a tribe of Indian people from the Punjab and Rajasthan region, who migrated to Europe a few centuries ago. The still keep the Indian culture and music alive in every country they go in their style of playing, dancing and singing.

At one time it was mistakenly thought they were of Egyptian origin; hence the name "gypsies" which they regard as insulting.

In some parts of Eastern and central Europe, Roma and only Roma were allowed to be kept, bought and sold as slaves - for example in parts of the Austrian Empire and the Balkans.

Linguistic and genetic information leads scientists to believe that the origin of gypsies, or Roma (Romanies) lies in northern India and that they migrated to Europe in the late Middle Ages.

The Gypsies, more properly known as Rom or Romani, are a group of people that emigrated from India (possibly in the modern Indian state of Rajasthanto) no earlier than the 11th century. The name is applied to other non-Rom peoples who are itinerant trades people. The name Gypsy is believed to originate as a corruption of "Egyptians" the supposed origin of the Rom.

In the late Middle Ages, Rroma migrated from India (as proven by the fact that their language, Rromani, is directly descended from Sanskrit). Upon their arrival in Europe, it was believed for some reason that they came from Egypt, which is where the crude exonym "Gypsy" comes from. Rroma endured centuries of persecution in Europe. The reason they were for a long time nomadic was not through any choice of their own but because of legislation that stopped them from living anywhere permanently.

You might be confused by all the stereotypes out there. Bear in mind: Rroma are people. Just like you and me. Living ordinary lives in an ordinary world. Don't judge or assume before you meet, and let individual people, not racisms inherited by society, color your opinions.

A modern Gypsy is someone who moves around alot. They often live in trailer homes. They are known to be swindlers and move because the cops are after them. This stereo type does not describe all gypsy's.

Travelers are a group of Irish people who personally identify with Romani culture, but the opposite isn't true. To the Romani, the travelers are generally seen as rude modern bastardizations of their ancient culture.
