Answer 1
It's quite the same. Most Indonesians are Sunni Muslims while a few are either sufis or shia. In the Middle East the majority are Sunnis. Shias are mainly located in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon and scattered in the rest of the region.
Answer 2
Ostensibly they are supposed to be the same. In practice, there are distinct differences. Most Indonesian Muslims are Sunnis from the Shafi'i School. In the Middle East, the Hanafi, Hanbali, and Maliki Schools of Sunni Islam are much more popular. However, the differences between Indonesian Islam and Middle Eastern Islam are more stark than the few differences in jurisprudence between Hanafis and Shafi'is.
Most of these differences come from syncretism with Indonesian endemic faiths that only happened in Indonesia. One example of syncretic Indonesian rituals are Awwal Muharram (Islamic New Year), where the Sultan of Yogyakarta climbs to the top of an active volcano to plead with the forces of nature to protect them from catastrophe with food and flowers. This is an adoption of the previous Animist holiday of First of Suro, which has no corollary outside of Indonesia. There are also religions like Kejawan which are Muslim-Animist hybrid religions. Additionally, the Muslims of Kalimintan (Indonesian Borneo) often perform old Animist rituals but dedicate them to God now as opposed to the various fomer spirits.
The question is what can be called "mixing apples with oranges". The reason the question is poorly structured is that it asks the differences between a nation, the USA, and a religion, Islam. The USA has Islamic peoples, and Islamic peoples in Indonesia, the Middle East & Malaysia all have differences. There is no single "American religion" and there are no "Islamic" peoples that live in nations where Islam predominates that have the same cultures. In fact, in some European nations Islam is the predominate religion. Therefore there can be be no answer to this question.
