The Massachusetts Bay Colony controlled most of New England during the 17th century. Established in 1630, it became a significant Puritan settlement and gradually expanded its influence over neighboring areas, including parts of present-day Maine, New Hampshire, and Connecticut. The colony played a central role in the region's economic, political, and cultural development until the formation of the New England Confederation in 1643 and subsequent colonial changes.
