The "Middle East" is a term used to describe a region (note: not a specific geographical location), and as such encompasses portions of the North African continent as well as Western Asia.

The term is used much in the same way as one would refer to the general geographical location of "Southern Africa", but not a specific country.

Currently the media makes use of the term "Middle East" in general references to countries surrounding the Arabian Gulf as well as those that border the eastern parts of the Mediterranean Sea - which is is not quite the full picture.

In a geographical sense the "Middle East" sits almost entirely on what is known as the Arabian Plate (plate tectonics). This plate sits between of the African Plate, the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate, although the region forms part of the Asian continent.
