The mali Empire started with a king with the name of Sundiata. The EMpire started in the 12th century, but didnt start to fame until about the 13th century due to their new king. His name was Mansa Musa, he took the throne in 1312 and lasted about 35 years.(1312-37). He was well known for his piligrimage and his generousity. Mali also reached its peaks when he was in rule, and had an estimated population of 40 to 50 million people. It prospered more then any country at the time, and also was rich in farm land and agricultural.
The empire began to rapidly decline in the 14th centruy due to the songhai army and Mansa Musa's death. By about the 16th century MAli was no more then a few towns.
