By the late 19th century, during the period known as the "Scramble for Africa," approximately 90% of the continent was under European colonial control. Major powers like Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, and Portugal divided Africa among themselves, often disregarding existing tribal and cultural boundaries. This extensive colonization significantly impacted Africa's political, social, and economic landscapes. The effects of European control are still felt in many African countries today.

By the early 20th century, Belgium controlled the most land in Africa, primarily due to its possession of the Congo Free State. The vast territory was exploited for its resources, particularly rubber, under harsh conditions. However, other European powers like Britain and France also held significant territories across the continent. Overall, Belgium's control of the Congo marked a notable example of colonial exploitation during that period.

Africa is a continent not a country. There are no African countries that are members of NATO. Other then the US and Canada, all of the members are European.
