For years much of this region had been controlled by other powers as conflict among ethnic groups prevent any real sense of unity. For a while (four decades) it had been controlled by the Soviet Union, but in the late 1980's to 1990's, there was a demand for political reforms and soon they were free from Communist control- in fact, in 1989 it went into a market economy. The region is less urban compared to the rest of Europe and they have a long way to recover from much of the damage from the years past.
