The Massachusetts Bay Company was issued a royal charter in March of 1629.

Acting under the company charter, the colonists established the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on June 12, 1630. The first meeting of the Massachusetts General Court, their legislative assembly, was in October of 1630. That was the first semi-autonomous government in Massachusetts and was the direct ancestor of the present-day Massachusetts state government.

During the American Revolutionary War, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts drew up its own state constitution in 1780. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts was admitted as a state when it ratified the US Constitution on February 6, 1788.
