Kashmir was primarily a Muslim-majority region, with approximately 77% of its population identifying as Muslim at the time of the partition in 1947. Given the principle of partition, which aimed to create separate nations based on religious Demographics, many argued that Kashmir should have been awarded to Pakistan. Additionally, the cultural and historical ties of the region to Pakistan further supported the claim for its inclusion in the newly formed state. However, the decision ultimately rested with the Maharaja of Kashmir, who chose to accede to India, leading to ongoing disputes.
