AK74. The AK74M is the current version, although some older versions still remain in service. It fires the 5.45x39 cartridge, which was developed after evaluations of the use of the American M16 rifle and it's small calibre, high velocity cartridge in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, etc.
Some units will still utilise the 7.62x39 AKM and AK-103, although these are select units serving a specific purpose, and the AK74 remains standard.
The Russians did develop a 5.56x45 variant of the AK-74M, called the AK-101, and there was a general belief that the Russians adopted this after the dissolution of the Soviet Union - however, this is untrue, and the AK-101 was developed solely for export (users include the Cypriot National Guard, the Venezuelan Armed Forces of Cooperation, and others).
