Washington, John Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Jackson, Tyler, Taylor and Carter all earned at least part of their income by farming. Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Jackson, Tyler and Taylor owned large plantations worked by slave labor. William Henry Harrison owned considerable farm land, but I think he share-cropped it or let his son do the farming. Carter's father grew peanuts but turned it into a peanut distribution business- I am not sure that Jimmy Carter actually planted peanuts himself. Truman ran his father's farm for awhile when he was a young man.
Senator.
Barack Obama
I count six -- Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Quincy Adams, VanBuren and Buchanan were Secretaries of State before being elected president.
Only one--Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected to four terms, though he died before he could complete his fourth. In response, the US Constitution was amended to prohibit future Presidents from being elected to more than two terms.
I think he has only a slight chance of being nominated and no chance at being elected.
All but 4 of the 43 Presidents held an elected office before they were President. Those that did not were Taylor, Grant, Hoover and Eisenhower. George Washington did not serve any elected office under the US Constitution, but he was elected to serveral positions in the colonial government. Herbert Hoover was Secretary of Commerce which is a national office, but is not elected.
Gerald Ford and Nelson Rockefeller
To my knowledge, they have mostly been protestant. I know JFK was the first Catholic - at least he caused a lot of concern with his being Catholic before he was elected.
George Bush, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Martin Van Buren. Your Welcome!!
Many presidents were lawyers perviously.
John F. Kennedy was a naval officer, author, congressman and senator before being elected as president.
Presindent O'Bama is the 44th person to hold the office.
