Germany, Austria and - in the end - the Ottoman Empire as the so-called "Axis" countries on the one side, and the Russian Empire, France and Britain and in the end the US and Italy as the "Allied" countries. Other countries were unwillingly involved because they were overrun or because their country became a battlefield, like Belgium.

It is called the first "world' war because technically, all the warring countries' many colonies and posessions were automatically involved in the war as well. The name "World War 1" is by the way a later invention: at the time and until after 1940/1945 it was called - and sometimes still is, especially in Great Britain - the Great War. To give you an idea of all the countries/colonies technically if not actively involved in WW 1, here is the complete list. It's seperated by continent/area :

Central Powers
  • Germany
  • Austria-Hungary
  • Ottoman Empire
  • Bulgaria

Allies and associated powers

  • Serbia
  • Russia
  • France
  • Britain
  • Belgium
  • Romania
  • US (entered in 1917 only after a German u-boat sunk a boat full of civilians)
  • The British Commonwealth countries: Australia, Which_countries_were_involved_in_World_War_1, South Africa, India, etc. Canada was part of this group but was almost instantly looked upon as a rising superpower for it's soldiers bravery and tactics, the Germans started calling them the "storm troopers" after they took Vimy Ridge (a vantage point previously thought impossible to take after numerous tries by the British and french)
  • Italy
