Before Pearl Harbor was bombed, the people of America voiced their isolationist views verbally to their neighbors, to the media and in the legislative bodies of the states and federal government. The newspapers had a field day as well as the radio citing the complaints of isolationists who refused to fight in another war over in Europe. (World War 1 had been a huge mistake for the US to most Americans.)

The Americans were very verbal about not fighting again because they failed to realize what Hitler and the Nazis were doing to millions of Europeans. It was not like they had the internet, transatlantic calling abilities, satellites, television or world papers. Some had heard about what was happening to the Jews and figured it was not true and was a bunch of Propaganda to get the Americans to help the Brits and French and other Europeans.

Once the Americans found the concentration camps hundreds of soldiers were filmed as they admitted "they now knew why they were fighting this war". They had not realized the extent of the Nazi evilness until nearly the end of the war. The government of the US and the leading Military leaders knew but not the average soldier, marine or sailor or aviator.
