There's an artist here in SLC Utah who created a portrait of George W. Bush with plastic army men. There is one army man for every soldier who had died (by the time he made it). Since the number kept growing, the artist added a flip book beneath the portrait that raises in number every time a soldier dies under the GWB administration.
The flip book is currently set to:
4,469
As of March 2014, the total number of US Military deaths in Afghanistan total 2,175, but not all of these occurred during the Obama Administration. The number of casualties began to increase greatly in the 7th and 8th years of the Bush administration (2007, 2008). Since President Obama took office in January 2009, there have been 1651 casualties. It should also be noted that since 2010, when 496 lost their lives, the number of casualties has been steadily declining, to a low of 120 in 2013.
Much less than under his predecessor, Republican President George W. Bush, who started the wars. But Obama was saddled with the aftermath of Bush's wars and commitments and could pull out only very gradually. Since Obama became President in 2008, 1,188 coalition soldiers died in Afghanistan. In Iraq, it's also mostly 'coalition troops casualties' that are counted: some 600 in all after 2008. During the Bush years, the coalition forces lost around 4,500 dead. The invasion and the very poorly thought-through US policies immediately afterwards unleashed however a civil and religous war that so far has claimed the lives of some 500,000 Iraqi citizens.
260. Total since 3/19/03 4,497. These were mainly under the Bush administration.
