1957 : Man launches the first artificial satellite (USSR launched 'Sputnik')

1957 : Laser - Charles Hard Townes and Arthur Leonard Schawlow (Bell Labs) began a serious study of the infrared laser. As ideas developed, they concentrated upon visible light (Optical Maser; Maser being an earlier development in 1953).

1960 : First 'Field Effect Transistor' (FET) was made (Kahng and Atalla at Bell Labs in 1960) that made a host of devices possible (watches, calculators, displays, computers and cell-phones are some leading examples)

1962 : World came to the brink of WW III when President Kennedy (USA) successfully quarantined Cuba, to prevent USSR missiles from reaching Cuba and to dismantle the ones aleardy there
