Technically it's a Half Dime, although it is 5 cents. The first US 5 cent coin was made in 1866. Assuming the coin is circulated and has no mintmark, the 1863 Liberty Seated Half Dime is a better date of the series. Because most coins show heavy wear, for an accurate assessment of value the coin needs to be seen and graded. In general retail values for low grade coins are $125.00-$240.00, better grade are $340.00-$400.00 and coins showing almost no wear run from $510.00-$575.00. Values are a market average and only for coins in collectible condition, coins that are bent, corroded, scratched, used as jewelery or have been cleaned have far less value if any to a collector or dealer.

Rogrwilk again... when I look at 1863 Liberty Seated Half Dimes on the internet, they look nothing like the coin I have. On one side, my coin has the big number "5" and the word "cents" under it. The 5 is encircled by a ring of stars with the wording above the stars reading "United States of America". On the other side the date of 1863 appears with the words "In God We Trust" along with a design just like on the one side of the 1882 Shield Nickel. So do I have an 1863 half dime and if so, why can't I find a picture like the one I have on the internet?? Thanks for your help!!
