Probably not so much a direct role, but maybe there was an indirect effect that played out over the next 10-12 years that culminated in the Civil War. The success of the US Army in defeating Mexico and acquiring from Mexico the entire southwestern part of the modern US, actually helped Zachary Taylor, a Democrat, win the 1848 election. Taylor was a hero of the early part of the war, leading the US Army in defeating the northern Mexican army at the battle of Buena Vista, securing the Texas border. The war effort was led in Washington by President Polk, a Democrat, and the Democratically controlled Congress. As the lands added as a result of the war were generally considered in the "south", the Democrats saw the long range effect as adding territories that would be slave holding states, that would consolidate their political power. The war was not popular in the north generally and in very unpopular in New England specifically. The failure of the Whig party (whose political base was in the north and New England) to raise strong opposition and to take a significant stand against slavery in general caused the Whig party to fail and to be replaced by the new Republican party by 1854. The Republican party took a strong stance against the spread of slavery into the new territories acquired from Mexico, and this was one of the issues that increased the tensions between the north and south, helping to lead to the Civil War in 1861.
