The answer to this question has been debated among historians. Many of them point to the fall of Atlanta in September of 1864 as the beginning of the end. Others point to political factors, namely the reelection of US President Lincoln as the event that would cause the war to continue.Other historians believe that the Confederate defeat at Gettysburg was when the tide of the war turned in favor of the North. This is often disputed in that Lee's Army of Northern Virginia was allowed by Union General Meade to escape to Virginia. Clearly Lincoln was furious about this, however, because the South was still able to field significant numbers of troops after Gettysburg, that the battle there was still not a turning point.
