The Maritime Committee of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania specified the flag in the Flag Resolution of June 14th 1777: "Resolved: that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation." Notice how the design is open to lots of interpretation. Francis Hopkinson is credited with the design of the first flag of the United States of America. Other than the alternating red and white stripes the 13 stars were arranged in a 3-2-3-2-3 pattern in the upper left corner of the flag, the "union."
Assuming you are referring to the US flag as there is no such thing as the American flag. The colors in the flag have no official meaning. Many people have come up with meanings over the past 200+ years, but, unlike several other countries (such as France and Mexico), the US does not officially define the meaning behind the colors used in its flag.
There are two answers to this question: 1. During the American Revolution and the years leading up to it, the Patriots had organized themselves into militias for the common defense (actually, so did the Tories). A few of these units at least in Massachusetts prided themselves on always being ready to assemble and were sometimes called "Minutemen" because of their ability to muster so quickly. There was no specific flag for such units. Many (but not all) of the militia units adopted such flag (properly called colors) as they saw fit. There was no uniformity in flag design in that era. 2. During World War II the US Government needed extra funding and so there were drives to raise money through the sale of bonds. On May 16, 1942 S.D. Mahan as assignor for the US Department of the Treasury applied for a patent on a design for a flag that showed a silhouette of the statue of the Minuteman in Concord (Massachusetts) at the North Bridge surrounded by 13 stars. Patent D133,481 was issued for this design on August 8, 1942. There were a number of different variations in the flag design and they were awarded to businesses and individuals who met specific goals in selling War Bonds. In addition there were several different additional symbols that could be added to the flag for exceeding the goal. The North American Vexillological Association published information about these flags in its newsletter "NAVA News" in 2006. Contact Dave Martucci, vex@vexman.net for more info.
well there are many ways the flag does this. 1. It makes you proud to be an american, to realize that the flag and our country has gone on 200 years worth of wars and has never been defeated. 2. It brings us together during the fourth of july as we celebrate independence day, we can be thank ful for all the soldiers ( fathers, sons) for taking the time to stand up for our freedom

White myths and lore say that the American Indians came across the Bering strait from Russia or perhaps, they came from Asia, or perhaps parts of Africa. Next year some other country will lay claim to the American Indian. So far there has been no evidence that the American Indian came from any other country. American Indians believe that the Creator put them on these lands since time began. This is a far more logical answer since they have dug up pottery that predates the Ice Age by several thousands of years right on these lands.
This is a very good question.there was a lady named bertha Kingston of Honduras in 1935 that came up with a very complex design of the flag~
The rule is that the American flag has to be higher up than the Canadian flag.

No. This is a story her grandson made up. Congress gives credit to Francis Hopkinson who designed the flag. The first flag was made for the navy in 1776 and it was a basic British flag with stripes. The second flag had stars where the British flag had a cross.
The American flag is not to be repaired but replaced according to the US Flag Code - see link below .
It is a common myth that Betsy Ross came up with the idea for our country's current rectangular flag.
Oh, that's an interesting question, friend. The rebel flag, also known as the Confederate flag, was actually designed by William Porcher Miles, a member of the Confederate Congress during the American Civil War. While it has different meanings for different people, it's important to approach discussions about it with kindness and understanding. Remember, every question is a chance to learn and grow.
